Default 84 F/R Microswitch

Can someone help me out with the micro switch on the the F/R Switch.

Is the purpose of this switch to protect the engine by preventing switching from forward to reverse without shutting off engine in between?

I have jumpered around this switch and cart will crank in reverse and forward.

However, with switch connected, Cart will crank in REVERSE ONLY. When I switch to reverse, there is an indentation in the round plate and the cart will only crank with micro-switch wheel in that indentation.

When I go to forward, cart will not crank, but there is also not a similar indentation on the other side of the plate for the micro-switch wheel to drop into.

That switch is for the reverse buzzer.

Some years have 2 microswitches in the FnR switch.

The other one is hooked in series with the key, and pedal switches.

Yours might not have the 2nd switch.

I think the switch I have is in series with the key and pedal. Cart will not run unless I jumper around it.

However, what you say makes sense and explains why there would be an indentation only only the reverse side of the plate where the switch would engage in reverse.

Actually, there are TWO indentions in that round plate, but I can't really see a way to make the other one engage that switch.

What is the purpose of the second switch you referenced above?

It's called the neutral limit switch. The HEI mod diagram shows both switches.

The 85 manual still only shows the reverse buzzer switch.

My 87 has both switches.

Yes, based on what you wrote and the diagram, it is clear that the switch I see was originally intended to be the backup Buzzer.

So, there is really no reason for that switch, wired correctly, to stop it from cranking in Forward. I am guessing someone wired it wrong BEFORE I got it.

In this case, there is no real reason not to simply jumper around that switch?

Is the neutral limit switch what keeps from shifting from forward to reverse (or vice versa) without first stop the engine?

Yes, but yours was designed without it.

I'm not sure it's really effective anyhow. Moving the lever breaks the large contacts at the same time. When the large contacts connect for the other direction, the switch makes contact at the same time.

It's still possible to go in reverse while the engine is still spinning forward from inertia. That's why you have to pay attention, and just not do that.

The FnR switch works fine without any microswitches.

If you really wanted to, you could move the buzzer switch to the other side of the rotating plate, and use it as a neutral safety switch. I don't see a need, but you could if you wanted to.

Which side of the plate should the buzzer switch be on by the original design?
Right now, the switch is located on the left side of the rotating plate (assuming one is sitting in the drivers seat facing forward).

I am curious if someone had already done that mod or maybe just mis-wired it before I got it. It would not start unless that switch was engaged and the only way it would engae is if the shift was in reverse.

I am good simply jumpering around the switch as it is now as long as it is not something that could cause engine problems/damage later.

My buzzer switch is on the driver's side, and the neutral switch is on the passenger side.

You're not going to hurt anything. Somebody mistakenly wired the buzzer switch into the control circuit.
