Marathon Tops Out at 13-14mph

1985 marathon , this is one I am working on for the cancer patient. When I picked it up the governor cable was cut off , got the carb cleaned and installed . It runs but tops out around 13-14 mph with no governor.
What should I start looking at ?

Did you get it to run in forward yet?

I'm thinking it's time for a compression check.

I would also run a strong batch of Seafoam to loosen up the rings. You may find that the longer you run it, the better it gets.

Yes it runs in forward ,it is reverse that it won't run .
Thought maybe some seafoam , a tank of 93octane without ethanol. It has been sitting for awhile I understand .

Good luck with finding 93 without ethanol. That is what they use to get the octane rating up.
93 actually has less energy than 87. It's more difficult to ignite, and allows a higher compression ratio.

I forgot yours is the opposite problem of most. I would still check compression.

Will check it this weekend .
There are plenty of stations around here that sale the real gas , the low ethanol stuff . that is all I run in my small engines.
What should compression be in these??
