1987 ezgo txt 2pg robin engine troubles
Hi I am new to the site but having major problems with my 1987 EZGO 2pg engine. Ive owned this cart for about two years. drove pretty good but has always had a lack of power and a couple months ago I blew a head gasket. so decided to do a top-end rebuild. the rebuild went perfect we fired it up after the rebuild and it started right up. smoked a little bit of course but it started none the less. We stopped running it because I read to put a 5 gallows of 40 to 1 mixture in it for break in. we drove the car for about 5 minutes and suddenly it just shut off. We got it going again after sitting a couple minutes. Got it back to camp and noticed gas flying out of the joint between the exhaust pipe and muffler. I replaced the carb with another but still the same issue. I took off the fuel pump and took the top plate off and the plastic diapram looked good. So put it back together and same results. Engine just turns over and gas pouring out of the exhaust joint. So can someone please help me out l here. Did I do something wrong during the top-end rebuild or did I just get a bad carburetor and fuel pump probably bad??? I'm new to these Robin 2-stroke Motors but I've **** near replaced everything on it so far besides the crank seals. ignitions all new and this thing was running like a top and put the head gasket blew. Any help would be great...thanks

Is the choke open?

No. But when I do choke it the fuel leaks worse. I've tried 3 different carbs I had laying around. Just in case the float was sticking on the new carb. But same results with all 3 carbs

First thing i would do is fix the leak between the exhaust pipe, and muffler.
After that, take the fuel pump apart the rest of the way, and look at the lower diaphragm. Because that is the one that is ripped, and flooding out the engine. |

Re: 1987 ezgo txt 2pg robin engine troubles
I figured that the lower diaphragm was probably the one that was damaged.....and that's why the fuel just flows into the block freely. this is the weird thing when it was firing there was no exhaust leak at the Joint it's only leaking fuel? but I did order a new gasket and I'm going to give that a shot along with a new fuel pump. so fingers crossed.

Anybody else have any input or experienced this? Waiting on parts and would love to hear from other that this has happened to. They made over 3 mill of these 2pg there has to be a clear answer. Would t j is have anything to do with the piston or rings?

Re: 1987 ezgo txt 2pg robin engine troubles
It would be pretty easy to just open up the pump, and confirm a ripped diaphragm.
You don't have to guess. Piston goes in with the side port facing the intake. Rings go in bevel side up. Ends of rings wrap around alignment pins in ring groove. Ring end gap is .008" to .016" |

Are you sure you have spark ? If so replace the plug. It sounds like the plug may be fouled and not firing under compression. A fouled plug WILL NOT RECOVER !!!

Re: 1987 ezgo txt 2pg robin engine troubles
Yeah I thought about the plug as well and I did replace that with one I had laying around but not sure if that one was good. just ordered a new fuel pump I'm going to do a HEI upgrade for the spark. but I do have one question and this is the only thing that I am unsure of. I watch the video to guide me through the top end rebuild and the video never mentioned or did I even see that the Rings had bevels on them. so what would happen if the Rings were installed upside down? would it cause the issue that I'm having? I may have to pull this thing back out and rip it down again just to check the Rings which totally sucks.

Not sure on that one but on rings with bevels I have seen if they are upside down they would compress allowing piston to go in the cylinder
