87 marathon gas starts when cold, but not when it's hot
My 1987 marathon cart has a new carb and new fuel pump. It starts right up when it is cold but doesn't want to start when it's warm. It has great spark all the time. If I remove the plug when it's warm and manually get fuel into the cylinder, it will run like a champ until you stop again. What would keep fuel from getting from the carb into the cylinder when it's warm?

Did you check and see if your tank is vented? Next time it won't start take the fuel cap off and let it get some air and try to start it and see what happens.

It's always good to do a compression check. 120 psi is good. 100 is ok.
In your situation I lean towards crankshaft seals. Read a few of the recent threads to see how to test them. Crankshaft seals will cause the fuel pump to not work, but they have no affect on compression. |

I have already tried leaving the fuel cap loose, and that doesn't help. The fuel pump pumps a lot of fuel wether it is warm or cold. You can full choke it for 8-10 cranks when it is warm and it will still have a dry plug. I have never experienced anything like this.

I tried spraying ether around the crankcase and intake tube and it still didn't fire once it was warm and was shut off???

Here is a link to testing. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-e...aft-seals.html
If the cart will run, jack the rear wheels up and have a buddy run the throttle at as even rpm as he can. While he is running it spray some wd40 on each crank case seal and if the engine revs to a higher rpm the seals are bad. I believe this is one way of checking them. If I am wrong some one correct me please. |
