Default Low speed chugging

Hello everyone, it's been a while since I've posted. So my 83 cart is up and running pretty well. The only issue I have now is it "chugging" at low speed (5-6 mph) runs smooth at faster speeds. I'm assuming this is a clutch issue? I haven't done anything with it at this point. Any ideas?

Chugging? Like sputtering? I'm trying to understand what you mean because mine seems to break up going down hill at slow speed....I'm trying to figure it out myself but I have eliminated a few things and have a few suspects

No, not sputtering. I don't believe it's engine related. I'm not very familiar with how the clutches work on these carts but it seems like the drive engages then begins to disengage then engages again causing a chugging.

Oh so it's the actual cart kind of lunging as opposed to the engine causing it....I would put the rear up on jack stands and see if the primary clutch (on the engine) is opening and closing smoothly.....that's the comet duster and usually a new spring and a good cleaning is all they take to get working smoothly. If it's the secondary clutch I would GUESS a new spring would help with this....I'm not as familiar with the secondary clutch I know the comet pretty good and there's not a whole lot that can go bad, the weights can wear and the spring can get weak that's about it

Sure thing....if you decide to disassemble that comet, let me know I got pretty efficient at that also lol. The hardest part is getting it off the cart. You can remove and inspect the weights without taking the clutch apart, i use 2 woodworking clamps to open the clutch and hold it open, you cannot do this on the cart the clutch face needs to be pointing up with the pulley laying on a flat surface such as a work bench or the weights will fall out. The weights should go back in the same slot they came from as they are mated in sets of three and may not all be the same weight

I believe this is the one if I'm replacing the entire assembly - http://www.ebay.com/itm/EZGO-Gas-Gol...NXkREl&vxp=mtr

Having a hard time finding the spring only. Would you have a part number by chance and a possible supplier? Thank you!

https://www.denniskirk.com/search/Comet+duster.q

Please make sure you do in fact have a comet duster for your primary and it wasn't changed.....the original spring would've been pink however you can go stiffer or lighter depending on how you want the clutch to perform....check this link for info

http://kawicat.tripod.com/weblog/id4.html

This was a very popular snowmobile clutch around the same time, another note if you do buy new weights it matters if you have a smooth or ribbed cover on the clutch, you need to buy the proper weights for the proper cover
