Default Thinking of buying 2005 EzGo ST 4x4 w/Honda

Hello everyone,

Finally got our 1968 Cushman sold and now looking at a 2005 EzGo ST 4x4 with an 18.5hp Honda motor. According to the seller it idles poorly and is difficult to shift. From what I can tell from reading the forums this is pretty common.

Since the primary drivers of this cart will be my wife and 16 year old daughter, I need to make sure this cart can be made to operate as it should or I'll just keep looking for a gator or a mule.

Does anyone know if this engine cart setup can be made to operate as it should? A bonus answer would be what should I expect to do to make this right.

Thanks,

Bob Kopicki

Bob,

Yes the engine can be made to idle correctly. If not by cleaning the carb or a cable adjustment then by possibly replacing the carb. Now it will not shift well and will grind going into gear if the idle is too high or if the primary clutch is worn and not releasing properly. Another of the primary clutch issues on these is when the belt and or clutch is worn and it does not engage until higher engine RPMs, it will then be quite harsh on takeoff. Depending on how the clutch is worn it may be able to be shimmed or cleaned to restore it. However if it is not repairable it is in the $700 range from EZGO.
