Default too loud, dies off at speed, cold blooded

OK--gone thru forum got good advise. Now I just bought a 1988 EZGO in really good shape --got good deal- it runs somewhat--starts real good but lacks performance -muffler is loud but solid . My question is this---Is 1988 a morphidite or what all the parts available are for 1976-1987 then it goes to 1989 to whatever. I know they changed to 4 cycle in 1990 so I understand that--but what happened in 1988 that changed so much.
I want to solve both the performance problem but most of all need to quiet it down--you have to almost yell to talk. I see the mufflers are expensive but that's OK if I get the one engineered for that cart and not a Chinese version that will be just as loud. Need your input on where to get one--($1000.00) is out of the question. There's also some engine noise like bearings --I don't want to start throwing parts at it . Where would you guys start??
p.s this my first Gas cart

The 88 is a 2-pg engine. It's the same as the other 2-pg years that have an external starter/generator.I believe 1980 was the year of change. The difference is that your carburetor is bigger. It's a Mikuni BV-24 instead of a BV-18.

The other difference is the exhaust pipe, and muffler. You will notice that your pipe enters the top end of the muffler.

The carburetor, muffler combination gained 2 horsepower going from 9 to 11.

The internal parts are all the same.

Your performance problem could be a lack of back pressure from a loud exhaust. Two strokes are sensitive to that. Some people have been known to cut the exhaust open, and rebuild it.
