86 marathon wont run
Hey guys, new to the site. I'm in need of some help. I've got a 86 marathon. I've been working on this thing for weeks. Ran last year, then quit. It wouldn't hold a charge so replaced the starter generator. The wiring was a complete mess so redid it all. For the life of me I can't get it to run. The solenoid I've replaced 3 times. I've did the conversion like other post have talked about. Still nothing. Replaced the limit switches and still no go. I'm not sure what else I can replace. Is there something I'm missing? Any help would be great. Thanks.

Does it turn over?
Does it turn over fast, or slow? Have you load tested the battery? If it doesn't spin we go for an electrical issue. If it spins, and doesn't fire, we look at spark, fuel, and seals. We definitely need more information. |

Re: 86 marathon wont run
Got a brand new deep cycle battery. Doesn't spin or anything. 12v going to the solenoid battery side. Brand new solenoid. I do have 12v going through the pedal micro switch over to the solenoid. I get zero on the one large post, 12v on each of the small and 12v on the battery side. With nothing hooked up. If I hook up anything the whole system goes to zero. I made sure I've got good connections and clean ground. I did do the HEI conversion. Thinking that would fix it.

Re: 86 marathon wont run
Sounds like a ground issue. Maybe in the FnR switch.
Put your meter on resistance. Put one probe on the large output terminal of the solenoid. Follow the wire to the starter, and put the other probe there. What is the resistance? Then move the starter probe to the bottom lug (C) of the FnR switch. What is the resistance there? Then move the probe from (C) to ground. What is the resistance there? The large wire from (C) should go to the frame. There should be a large wire from there that goes to the engine block, and another one that goes to the battery negative terminal. I'm also not sure if a deep cycle battery would have the cranking amps to turn the starter. Go to the electric ezgo section, and and ask Johnny B about that. He knows everything about batteries. Forgot to ask. Does your solenoid click? Did you use a continuous duty golf cart solenoid? The small terminals on the solenoid should have one wire connected to your pedal microswitch, and the other terminal should be connected to ground. Either C, on the FnR, to the frame, or directly to the battery. |

.3
4.8 4.8 If I unhook everything it'll click. But as I hook everything up everything goes to zero. With no clicking. I'll see about getting another battery. I appreciate your help. |

Re: 86 marathon wont run
I just traced your starter wires. They are all right. That resistance doesn't look bad either.
Let's do something a little different. Connect battery as normal. Hook a set of jumper cables to your battery. Hook both cables to your your small solenoid terminals. Solenoid should click, starter should turn. Report results. Hook negative jumper cable to battery, and frame. Touch positive jumper cable to output side of solenoid. Starter should turn. Report results. Finally if none of that works, jump both cables directly to the starter. If you still don't get it to turn, remove the belt and try again. |

Re: 86 marathon wont run
I got the solenoid for both test. Got clicks on both test. Nothing on the starter. Do I just remove the one belt or both? I'm limited on the tools I have as I'm at a tractor show.

Re: 86 marathon wont run
Turn the starter by hand to see if the engine turns over easy enough.
Did you try jumping both cables directly from the battery to the starter? I still don't know about that battery. We need johnny B. The solenoid should have only clicked when you touched the small terminals. |

Re: 86 marathon wont run
It does turn by hand. Yep they only clicked when I touched the small terminals. F2 and A1 on the starter right?
