Charging issues on 89 Marathon
Hello all,
I have tried searching for my symptoms and cannot find them. So what I have going on is I have an 89 marathon that will not start after a while of driving. It acts like it has a dead battery because the starter/generator tries to turn motor over and cannot. So I took the battery in and had it tested and it had a dead cell in it. So I bought a new battery and again the same thing. After a while it will not turn the motor over to start it. I took the new battery in and had it tested and it was too low to test. I had them charge it and test it and it tested ok. I am leaning towards either a regulator issue or starter/generator charging issue such as worn brushes. I have not taken cart apart yet but will be doing so soon. Wanted to try and get some insight on where to look first. |

Re: Charging issues on 89 Marathon
This is an easy one.
Put the cart on blocks. Put a meter on the battery. Check voltage before starting. 12.7v is full charge. Start the cart, and check voltage again. Voltage should increase to the 13-14 volts range while running. If voltage does not increase, find the small green wire on the starter. Follow it down to the voltage regulator. Remove green wire from regulator, and ground it to the engine. Run the cart again. Voltage should climb way up to around 19 volts. If it does, that's a bad regulator. If not, bad news on the starter. Rule of thumb is that if it starts, it generates too. You can buy a new voltage regulator, or open it up and clean the points inside. Nothing to lose trying. |

Re: Charging issues on 89 Marathon
Ok I got a chance to go out and do some testing today here is what I got.
I had to jump it with my truck as the voltage on the battery was 11.7 volts. Which I knew was going to be low because of my issue. So I got it running and tested the voltage at the battery and was getting like 12.7 - 15 but probably averaging around 13.5-14. But then I realized I still had the jumper cables on. So I took them off and remeasured the voltage and now it was down to around 10-10.7 which is much lower. I didn't get a chance to take the green wire off and retest as it started storming on me at this point. Any more thoughts on this at this time? Thanks. |

Re: Charging issues on 89 Marathon
You are only half way done. The system is not charging.
Now move the green wire to determine which part is bad. |

Re: Charging issues on 89 Marathon
Ok, I got back out there today and was able to get the cart running and checked voltage again. Again it was 9.8-10.1 volts. So I unhooked the green wire at the voltage regulator and grounded it to the engine and started the cart back up. Again I got 9.8-10.1 volts. Virtually no change at all. Does this mean the starter/generator is the issue? If so, would brushes take care of it?
Thanks, |
