That hole is where the oil pump brings the oil back to the top of the engine. Look at your cover. You will see a hole that matches that hole . When the cover is on, it comes up and gets distributed through the series of small holes along the cover top. However, if you have gas in your oil, that's not good. You sure it was fuel and not water?

If defiantly was primarily oil and gas. However, could of had some water as well. The hole on the other side was not drawing any oil up but i just assumed that was because I had the top off the case and oil/gas mix etc..

I have reinstalled the gas pump and changed the hoses. Ran out of time last night to work on it to finish reinstalling carb etc. The only thing that is concerning is that only one of the "oil holes" on the top end is pulling oil up. Should I be worried? Or will it start drawing with the top cover on.

This thing will run this weekend! I can feel it.

where did you get the new carb from? I have had on several occasions new A/M carbs where the float pin slides sideways and actually causes the float to stick, causing the carb to flood, fuel comes out of the tube on the side and gas gets in the oil. Before putting your carb back on, take the bowl off and check the float.

Well things were going very well until they weren't. The engine was at 180 compression and running, but not revving up enough to engage the clutch. I figured it was a carb issue so I ran the motor while tweaking it. Then it slammed to a stop and bound. I took it out to find that it had broken the piston arm again!!!!! Now I didn't get an OEM replacement , but figured the knockoff would at least work for a little while.

Back to square one. Or time to just sell it an admit I am no mechanic.

Don't have to sell just because you 'aren't a mechanic'.. maybe just invest some money into someone that is a little more versed in your issues. If you were struggling with replacing cams in your Audi S5 and kept damaging engine components, then yes, it might be time to find a new hobby. Golf carts are forgiving enough that you can botch them a few times and still end up on top. Don't be discouraged!!

After some encouraging advice from a fellow forum member, I am back at it. It appears that I might of not had the piston arms torqued to speck. Everything internally looks good except for one of the piston arms that came loose and broke a little. I have a new one arriving today and will give this one last try. Hopefully the old girl will be running tonight!

So I placed the pistons and crankshaft back in the block. When I torque the pistons to spec ( 14 lbs) the crankshaft binds. I tride putting the fan side cover back on to see if that helped, but it did not. I made sure both piston rods were Fan side facing along with DF/BF etc. Could a bad bearing be causing this? Or am I overlooking something?

Bump

Some of you engine guys chime in here. I have been trying to help Zypher here but I am at a loss!

Recap, Received cart engine locked up, rod broke at crank in 3 pieces.

Replaced only one rod. no vacuum to pull gas, timing belt off, retimed, engine ran very short time, no power, no rpm's, broke new rod, same hole at crank!

2nd new rod, crank spins by hand, install new rod to spec, engine will not rotate!

Zypher has told me the crank is polished smooth as a baby's ***! and he is following the torque spec's

BAD torque wrench?? When I build an engine I always rotate after each rod is installed and have never run into this unless I got the wrong bearings! and this engine has no rod bearings!!
WTH!!help:

If it was me I would pull crank and rods out inspect for burs on either crank or rods if all checks out I'd install the rods to the crank on the bench out of the block and make sure rods are spinning freely on the crank.... Is it possible you mixed up the "rod bearing caps" between the two?
