Default cart runs without throttle cable being connected

Hello im new to this forum and the golf cart world. I just bought an 88 ezgo marathon 2 stroke. I noticed that the throttle cable is not connected to the carb but some how runs and drives? I did notice that when driving that no matter where the pedal is it seems to run wide open, whether the pedal is 1/4 throttle 1/2 throttle or full throttle.( there is no slow speed unless you take your foot off the pedal completely) also the governor is disconnected. To me this is fine but is it ok to run without a governor. Also i noticed that the exhaust pipe tip was mashed in almost completely closing off the exhaust. After bending it back the cart seemed to have alot more power, the only thing is that i noticed the muffler start to smoke like it was burning off the carbon build up but then it turned glowing red where the pipe goes into the muffler. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you don't have a return spring on the carburetor and 2 strokes are famous for having plugged mufflers (oil gas mix) some take them off and burn them out. Welcome to BGW.

The carburetor is spring loaded wide open. The throttle cable pulls it shut. You are actually driving right now by turning the ignition on, and off. If you keep doing that, it's eventually going to backfire, and blow the seals out.

Most everybody gets rid of the governor.

When you hook up your throttle cable, this is what it should look like. Make sure that you take the spring from an ink pen, and slide it over the cable.

That prevents backfiring, and provides a smooth throttle response.

Thanks for the information. It does backfire now a little bit. So putting on the new throttle cable will make it run so its not running wide open and have a smooth range of speed?

Cart around thanks for the images. It doent look like you have the cable from the oil injector to the carb. Did u take yours off and run a premix? I would almost prefer to run a mix instead of the injector. Your thoughts? Again I really appreciate the information from you guys.

The oil injection is known to fail. Remove it, and plug the intake manifold with a 6mm screw. Mix 128 :1.

A throttle cable will give you a full response.
