Rear Shock Advice
Good Morning all,
I have a 1984 Marathon. Runs like a dream for its age. I got it when I bought a camper last year. It was part of the deal. Anyway....I'm in the need to work on it over the winter time. I want to add a rear seat on it to accommodate my daughter for when we are cruising around the campground. I know they don't make a bolt on seat. That part I already have figured out. I need to redo the seat itself then it will be on. However the issue I have is the rear shocks/springs. The people who had the car did it right. But it looks like they welded to spring together in the rear and its kinda soft. No way it can handle a seat without it sagging. Any suggestions on what I can buy/make to fix this issue. No current pic of the springs. I can get one tomorrow of it though if need. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Jesse A few current photos. |

Re: Rear Shock Advice
Shocks won't give it any more weight capacity or keep it from sagging, that's the springs. When you say something is welded together in the rear, we really won't know what you've got without pictures of it.
Normal suggestions would be to replace the soft leaf springs with heavier ones, or a "budget" version is to cut the ends off of an old leaf spring, cut it in half and use those as a "helper" leaf in place under the existing leaf springs. Without seeing what was welded together I'm not sure if either of those is a possibility. |

Re: Rear Shock Advice
It looks like a gas cart to me
Then it should have coil springs. So are you saying they welded the foil springs together? If so you can order stiffer coil springs for it or just replace with some stock ones I'll check when I get home tommarow if you want we're I found the aftermarket springs If it is an electric cart you just need hd rear leaf springs |

Re: Rear Shock Advice
Yeah its got coil springs in the rear. Sorry i assumed all carts were setup like this. They appears as if they were made though. I could be wrong. They definitely need to be stiffer. I guess what i was looking for is a replacement part that would "bolt right on" without modification or whatever. I'll grab a photo tomorrow if I can. Its stored in a garage but not at my house.

Re: Rear Shock Advice
your cart should be set up with Leaf springs from the factory. Sounds like someone converted it. Pics of the rear would help a ton. what is the length of the current strut, yamaha has rear struts i believe they are 14 inches. And they make a hevy duty rear strut for seat kits. Either way post some pics and i can get you he part #'S for either route you wanna take.

Re: Rear Shock Advice
Skoal is correct, The Marathon Gassers all had Coil in the rear, Leaf in the front. An old trick to stiffen them up for cargo boxes, seats, etc is to swap out the stock shocks for a set of Heavy-Duty Coilover shocks, when installed in addition to the stock springs they add enough to compensate for the weight as well as You can adjust the preload to dial them in *to an extent* ...
