87 Marathon won't go
I'm having a drive issue with my 87 Marathon. It began with a loud screeching noise from the drive belt. Originally I would spray belt ease on it, the sound would stop and the cart would go. Decided to replace the belt thinking it could be worn and problem solved-wrong.
After I replaced the drive belt it wouldn't move at all. The starter belt turns. I saw no fuel in the filter so I replaced fuel filter, spark plug, fuel line hose from each side of fuel filter and still nothing. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanx. |

Re: 87 Marathon won't go
You could try a shot of starting fluid in the air cleaner to make sure that it fires (use the kind with lube for the top end, it's better for your motor).
If it fires and that is not enough to prime your fuel system (so that you see fuel in the filters) then you might have a blown fuel pump diaphragm. You can order a rebuild kit from most suppliers. |

also, open up your gas cap and look in the tank, it's fairly common for the plastic fuel pick-up tube to come loose at the top fitting and fall into the tank, rendering it impossible for fuel to get into the lines - I've seen THAT one a lot

Re: 87 Marathon won't go
Does it seem to rev up high? That is assuming that it runs, of course. My 87 made a new drive belt screech and it was because of a ton of problems. The first, it had a bad primary clutch. This wouldn't let it grab firmly. Then once I got that fixed it still wouldn't get out of its own way because it didn't rev high enough to get into a working position on the clutch. I just tore down my motor to find the entire thing pretty much wasted. I am replacing crank bearings, both seals, piston, rings, all gaskets and possibly (fingers crossed) saving the jug with a bore and hone to .50 mm over.. but the wear was pretty bad. The 30 year old motor sure had a workout.
My cart would go in reverse better than drive, but not my much. Hopefully yours is something easy! |
