Default 1998 TXT Gas. 15MPH? Thats it? Help!!

So, got a 98 TXT stock cart running, after sitting for several years. Cleaned out carb, replaced igniter with one from a 1977 Chevy (HEI), replaced plugs, put on a new air box lid, put in new air filter, have the gov cranked up as far as it will go, and with stock tires and no lift, the best the cart will do is 14- maybe 15 mph. Is that all I am going to expect out of a 295 robin motor?

I did adjust the valves to .004 too. Motor is original and never torn apart, so no reason for timing to be off. When I first began the project I did a very quick and dirty compression check. One was 120 and the other was 90. Is this my problem??

Stock runs about 15 unless the governor has been tweeked then should be low 20s.

The twins should have 150-160 psi compression.

I had similar compression but it went up after a valve adjustment.
Was that compression before or after you did the valves?
I'd re check the valves again

I jacked up and watched the cart as I hit the throttle. The butterfly opens all the way until the rpms get up there, then the rev limiter backs off the butterfly. If I reach down and pull the butterfly open by hand, its got a TON more rpms behind it.

"In side the rear is the little weight that spin around and when they get to spinning to fast it pulls back through the lever on the cable going to the engine." (Ruredy) posted that at the end of that thread - thanks KGSC!! I'm wondering, if we unhook the cable going into the diff, which controls the rev limit, wouldn't that provide much more rpms?

Yes Black death, that PSI reading was from when I first started messing with the motor. Had not adjusted valves yet. I will get another compression reading tomorrow, now that I've run about 8 quarts of fresh oil through her. (the oil was con-jelled with water when I took the drain plug out the first time). She's clean, with a new filter now.

I'm also having an issue that if you barley give it gas, it'll sputter and spit, until something happens and it all the sudden starts running right. It is very weird.

You need both cables for your throttle to work. One comes from the go pedal and the other goes to the carb. Just tighten down on the lock nut behind the gov spring but not too tight or the motor go boom..

On the sputtering, try turning up the idle a little and see if that helps..

What about just bypassing the gov, like we do on the Yamaha's? Another words, run the peddle cable directly to the linkage that starts at the motor? Or, can these ez go engines not be able to handle that?

Also, I've found that if I pull the choke out each time I go to hit the gas, it'll go, and I can let go of the choke.

Its your cart so if you want to by pass go for it however I wouldn't. That extra few mph isn't worth a new motor from a rod coming through the side.

Carb may have a dirty pilot jet. That will effect low speed and idle

Yea, that's kinda what I was asking, and figured. I'll leave the gov attached. I think once I install 23" tires, the speed will come up. My son drove it around yesterday and made a comment that he thinks it is faster than my G8.

Just ordered tires, wheels, Jakes lift kit, H.D. springs, rear seat, lights for front and rear, and a windshield.

Wondering about the power kit they sell at CPP. : https://www.cartpartsplus.com/perfor...ezgo-power-kit

Any feedback on this spring? We installed these in the Yamaha's and they did excellent. Carts can climb a tree. Same with ezgo's?
