Default steering gear skiping

the steering is jumping, all the gears appear to be very good.
is there an adjustment on the rack or a wore out bushing?
thanks

This happens due to lack of greasing the rack system, wich can worsen by wearing out the slider bushings, and a bad main ball end on the rack.

Im guessing that your cart is between a 94 and 01?.

If so, you should be able to save it if nothing is worn out, you need to use your grease gun, and repack the rack assembly.

What is happing is that inside that gear box, the grease keeps constant pressure on the rack which keeps it tight against the helical gear that is connected to the stearing wheel rod. When there is lack of maintience, the grease slowly seeps out from behind that pressure bushing, and it doesnt push down on the rack as hard. thus allowing the main rack to lift away from the steering wheel gear, and jump teeth. Hopefully its not too bad, and it can be fixed by putting grease into it with a grease gun. If not, you need a rebuild kit.

cart is a 91 that i know of. and there is plenty of grease in the gears
not to say it didn't go dry at one time before. I am guessing
as you state it needs to be rebuilt.

Seeing that you said its a 91, then yes it sounds like you have a warn out rack, and it needs a new one.

93 and older carts use a different rack system, with that said, then yes, it sounds like a bad warn out rack, and you should need to replace it. I do believe that you can still get rebuild parts for it.

One other thing, did you check to see if by chance its the steering wheel spinning on the shaft.? it could be a possible cause. but since you said you have already checked the gear, i assume you already removed the steering wheel to remove the upper gear case. So it sounds like a warn out rack.

you will need ezgo p/n:
15407-G1 wich is the entire rack and rod assembly.
and
23279-G1 wich is the reduction gear that rides on the rack.

That should fix your problem.

you could get away with just installing the rack kit, but replacing the reduction gear will help as well. Midas well do it all the first time to pervent issues down the road.

i took a quick look at my service manuals, with that steering setup, you should beable to turn the input shaft with the gear case cover off to see where its jumping.

did some investigating and found the problem, the shaft that the
gear reduction is on didn't go into the top plate that the
steering column is on. not sure if it will fix totally but plan
on spaceing the shaft up to go into top plate totally.
a longer shaft would be a better answer or a total new
system, but the cost is more than the cart is worth.

Glad to see you found out what was causing the gears to jump.

I had a little feeling that it could of been that the pin was loose and causing the gear to jump, but personaly never seen one do that. Ive mainly seen warn out drive racks due to lack of maintenence.

Interesting, i would think that the pin would be full length to begin with, sounds like there could be some type of spacer that is broken or missing, or the end of the pin is broken or worn out, or did the end of the pin break through the bottom of the case that its mounted in?. Something fishy is going on for it to just suddenly happen.

Maby a pic of the internals of your steering box could help

I uploaded the diagram so you can see if any spacers or parts are missing.
