Question To Pulse, or Not to pulse

I'm currently tearing down my1989 3pg-244 marathon motor for crank bearings and top side goodies. Got clutch and flywheel off to find that the rotor has no magnets in it like a lawn mower? Is the pulsar like a proxsimity switch or does it have constant voltage thru it and the lobes on the rotor spikes up the voltage? I couldn't find that info in the manual. I've marked and scribed everything I can before I remove that bracket and pulser... just hoped someone might have a answer. Thanks
