My EZGO 295 rebuild...
Ok, I pulled my motor out this winter thinking I would "freshen it up" because it was smoking and using oil last year. Well, I ran it too low on oil and now have found some damage. Mainly the crank and piston rod. I went to the local golf cart shop to get some insight as to my options and got the recommendation from their mechanic to "fix what was broke", because after all, "it was running when I took it apart" and shouldn't buy a complete rebuild kit even though I had taken my notebook in with me with showing my measurements to the cylinders, crank, camshaft, etc, etc. However, if I wanted to buy a rebuild kit, it was approximately $2500. A new motor was about $3800 and they had a "recently rebuilt" engine for $1800 on their shelf. With that, I walked out and am now seeking better advice here.
Does anyone follow the ezgo engine manual when it comes to the specs (original & wear limits) or do you follow the "fix what was broke inside" methodology? How crucial are say, the bearing tolerances for the camshaft or crank? I understand excessive wear to the cam lobes or cylinders and their effects, just curious about some of the other measurements. Finally, I found a rebuild kit from one of the site sponsers here, but it does not say anything about oversized pistions when purchasing it so I assume it is for standard bore...guess I just need to call? Here are a few pics and measurements, let me know your thoughts. Thanks |

Re: My EZGO 295 rebuild...
looks like your crank would clean up (muriatic acid to remove the built up aluminum) but you'd need a new rod. I think they're around $60.
Been a while since I checked on the prices but.... You can get a rebuilt, bored out 295 (ends up 325) for somewhere in the $500-$600 range (more depending on your core and shipping) with a 90 day guarantee. There are several different engines shops in Augusta GA. (golf cart capital of the world) that do this. |

Re: My EZGO 295 rebuild...
That's sounds like good pricing on those 350's, but that's my delima. If I spend $1500, I'm in the same ballpark or real close as a big block dollar wise. Trying to decide what to do here, bore the cyls, new pistons/rings and 1 new rod - probably the cheapest way out, but was concerned about the bearing tolerances on the crank and camshaft. Most of my measurements came out to be right at limit or past the limit according to ezgo's manual. Maybe it not that big of a deal...I dunno.
Gonna try to celan up the crank first and go from there... |

Re: My EZGO 295 rebuild...
if the crank cleans up [most do] you should be able to get it up and running for around 400.00
2 pistons/rings 100.00 or so 2 rods 80.00 2 intake valves 50.00 gaskets/seals 75.00 boring 100.00 |

Re: My EZGO 295 rebuild...
thats a good price there, its hard to believe that they can put the parts list together for that money? don't get me wrong! but to me rebuilt means all valves, guides, keepers, cam etc... but then again i try to use ez go parts. aftermarket parts is a different story. tell us how it goes

Re: My EZGO 295 rebuild...
I agree, I haven't seen a rebuild kit under $650 anywhere. Their price is $550/excahnge for for 295's or 350's with a 6 month warranty. Maybe it's one of those "fix what was broke" rebuilds. I better do some more checkin into it...

Re: My EZGO 295 rebuild...
this is really the way to go if you going to stick with that engine. unless you can do it yourself and get a 30%-40% discount on the parts and can bore them out yourself like most places do. Just cause it would cost you $500 in parts doesn't mean it cost others that much. I don't think I have ever spent more than $300 on rebuilding one but I get a steep discount on parts.
