I've been ROBBED. Need help identifying a few things
Hey guys wish I was not having to write this but I think someone tried to steal my cart and wrecked some things while doing it. I have a 1988 EZGO Marathon gas cart here is the short story.
I ran the cart about 2 or 3 weeks ago just to move it around from the long Minnesota Winter and she ran just fine then. I was replacing some bad spots in my lawn with sod today and went to move the cart to lay some sod where it usually parks. All it did was crank and crank and crank and I started smellin gas. It's never not started before so I take the seat off and start looking around. I first noticed that the orange wire going to the coil looked like it broke so I stripped that quick to see if that was my problem then I noticed something else. I noticed just about every wire to the ignitor was clipped. The copper on all the wires look freshly cut and I would suspect this happened very recently. Here is my dilemma. Was there anything else taken? This is the only cart I have ever owned and mainly use it to haul the dogs a half mile down the road to a park and let them run around. I took a picture of the engine compartment after I removed the ignitor. Is there anything else that was taken? I am just puzzled because if they tried to hotwire it they obviously were doing it wrong. If they wanted to steal the ignitor why would they cut the leads so short especially why cut the wires going to the pulsator coil in two spots? They literally just needed to unplug it it (shaking my head). Which leads me to believe they stole something else that I can't see. Or they were just really stupid. The only thing perhaps that put a wrench in the equation is when the cart sits for a period of time the micro switch connected to the gas pedal gets goofy and I have to flick it a couple times at the switch with my finger to get things going but then it works like a champ as long as it's used every week or so. I live in a pretty good neighborhood that is less than ten years old with mostly families and never heard of any type of crime in the area. The cart is tucked right along side my house under my bedroom window. Out of site from the roads. I don't know anyone that owns another golf cart that knows I have this and would need parts. I am leaning towards someone trying to take it for a joyride and was smart enough to know what parts did what but not smart enough to hot wire it? Anyways I could really use some help I have pictured the engine compartment and also what I salvaged from the ignitor. Could anyone please help and also point me in a direction of getting a cheap replacement or I might try to solder this one back together but not sure if I want to take the risk. Thank you all in advance. |

The picture is too close, and the wrong angle to see anything.

The backup buzzer is unplugged, and the pulsar is unplugged from the ignitor. That's all I see.
This link is your wiring diagram. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/attac...n-retrofit.jpg |

No answers to your questions but wonder if that wasn't the work of mouse or a squirrel.

I intentionally unplugged the backup beeper and yes the pulsar is unplugged due to it being cut twice. I am just stumped to what the heck happened it appears nothing was taken yet 4 of the 5 wires were cut. Thank you very much for the wiring diagram. Is that diagram really using a 76 HEI to replace the ignitor? Can this be done is there any bad/good that can happen by doing this? |

When the ignitor fails, that is the go to fix. It's a lot cheaper, and produces a much hotter spark.
If I was you, I would just splice the wires back together. Keep the hei mod in mind for when the ignitor fails. |

Re: I've been ROBBED. Need help identifying a few things
Yeah LOL I am starting to think that angle as I have rabbits like crazy in my yard. The more I try to understand me being sabotaged it makes zero sense to what happened and more that an animal did it. These are the lowest wires on the cart and it's just random. For crying out loud two sheriff's live on my block one's house faces my backyard.
Onto repairing it I seem to like the hei method only if it gains me anything. I am not opposed to dropping $50 and a little time if it gives improvement (I understand no power gain from this mod). The cart has always sorta kinda been a hard starter when cold and tends to need the choke pulled for awhile until it fully warms up. The engine is rebuilt and also has a brand new fuel pump. I disconnected the oil injection but have not removed it is that okay? How reliable is the hei when done correctly and do I need a different spark plug? Thanks again guys. |

Re: I've been ROBBED. Need help identifying a few things
Oil injection; The important thing is to plug the banjo hole with a 6mm screw. The intake needs to be air tight.
The HEI will give you a hotter more reliable spark. You open up the gap on the plug. Many have noticed better starting. Mine jumps to life. It does not like much choke. I have to push it in as soon as the cart fires. I don't use the choke at all in the summer. When it's really cold in the winter, I only leave it on 4-5 seconds at the most. I don't know for sure that can be attributed to the HEI, but it makes sense. |
