Default 244 robbins rebuild and hop up

hello all,
I am getting ready to rebuild a 1985 ezgo 244 robbins...i would like to hop it up alittle bit...what are some do's and don'ts that you have discovered with this motor? i.e. increasing compression, aftermarket exhaust...better carb...better ignition....porting....balancing....it's running now but it seems a little tame...any input would be apreciated...thanks in advance...Dan

I doubt you'll find an aftermarket exhaust for it, moddin yours may be your only hope. Want more power... Bore it out as much as possible and stick the biggest piston you can find in it. porting and polishing won't hurt either. Find a good book on how to tune 2 strokes and read it a dozen times, this will help with carbs and jetting issues. The biggest problem I've found with 2 stroke cart engines is... because they run backwards also... there is no spark advance built into the ignition system. This limits their rpms. try to set the trigger/pickup were it advances the timing as much as possible but will still sorta run in reverse. A tunable drive clutch could really help by getting up some rpms before engaging.

thanks...didn't think about the spark advance...makes sense...has anyone ever fabricated a manual spark advance with let's say a cable mounted on the dash? my 1949 harley had a manual advance and retard located on the handle bars and ran via a cable to the distributor....the biggest over sized piston i found.50mm are there others..if so do you know a source?

thanks for your help
