Default 24hp honda trouble

Hello I just bought my first golf cart today with a 24hp honda engine. Got a great deal cause it wouldnt start. Well I got it started, ran it around the block, runs ok. The problem is that when I shut it off it makes a loud bang.
The other problem is I have to shut it off to get it into reverse, then shut it off again to get it in to forward. How can I fix these two gripes?
Thanks to all

Hello,
It sounds like a backfire.
Turn the idle speed down. This will cure the shift problem
and maybe the BANG to.

Hello,

I'm not sure, because my engine isn't in a golfcart configuration and mine isn't a Honda V
But i'm thinking of the Dirtysouthidea and / or a to short gascable that needs adjusting.
Another possibillity is a not free turning gasvalve.
Look if you can close the valve with your hand more than the cable does / alows.
When yes, put a drop of oil in the gascable to make it free / grease it and look if it's better.
Check the springs on the carb, are they strong enough to take the cable back?
Is there e sharp curve in the gascable?
Make it free.

The solenoid is a fuel shut off solenoid and closes fuel off when the key is turned off. The problem is your idle is set too high and while it stops rotating when you shut it off it is still drawing in fuel. also, check to see if it is actually set up to kill spark when you turn the key off or just kill fuel.is

I looked for a idle adjustment screw and couldnt find it. The only screw adjustment I found was next to the linkage and I turned that all the way down. Is there another adjustment I'm missing? My idle being high is the reason I cant shift from rev to fwd? I have to shut the engine down to shift.
I apologize for the dumb questions but this is my first golf cart.

The idle screw is under the air filter housing. It is hard to see, but it can be accessed through the flywheel side of the engine under the air filter housing.

I have a switch in the dash to kill spark. I took the solenoid out and grounded the solenoid housing and put 12v to the wire..it did nothing is it supposed to retract or did I just smoke check it?
