Default Marathon Engine Problem

Hello, while I was driving my friend home after we attended boy scouts. My Marathon made a weird few different noises it's hard to describe. Then it cut out and the engine didnt even start it just sounded like the battery was trying but not the engine. Then my dad came and towed me home. He checked the psi of the spark plug or something in the area. (To be honest im not that good at this stuff.) He said the compression was really low. He said the compressions psi was 30. Then he said something about how the piston rings or something could have something to do with it and we could have to replace. I just am curious could it be something else?

If your compression is only 30 psi then you dad is right- the engine needs some major mechanical work. If you are really lucky, then maybe you just blew the head gasket- that would be the best case scenario.

I had a similar issue with my 93 Marathon... Ended up being a broken timing belt. Not sure what year your cart is or what motor it has.

Is it a 2 stroke or 4 stroke? What year is the cart? If its a 2 stroke you're looking at a $400.00 rebuild kit and that's if you do it yourself. I rebuilt a 1988 that I sold last year and it's not hard to do. I would be more than happy to give you advice on it.

assuming this is a 2-stroke, a full top-end kit (piston, rings, cylinder and all gaskets) should run You around $175-180, and should be all You need to restore that engine - sounds like You either holed the piston, blew the head gasket, or possibly broke a ring, all of which lead to a new top end (about an hour and a half job max, easy to do with ordinary hand tools).

Personally, as long as You're pulling the engine to do the top end (a LOT easier than trying to do it in the cart) I would pop the extra $15 for a set of crank seals, it's not uncommon for the old ones to give out after a new top end is installed and as long as You're sitting there with the motor out they're really not hard to install (although the clutch and flywheel can be difficult to pull in some cases).

If You don't want to do it yourself, most reputable shops should charge around $150 for the labor plus the cost of parts to do the top end, another $25-50 to do the seals which should keep You under $400 all told if You're going to have it done for You.

Ring could have hung up in the exhaust port and snapped.

Thank you for the help. I was wondering where the best place to buy the top end replacement?
