Question 79 2 stroke Marathon adventure continues

Hi all, I have now fixed all the wiring hacks, welded up broken engine mount brackets replaced crank seals, replaced jug, piston and rings and it runs pretty good now. I am glad I did/learned all that.

However now after the top end rebuild the battery is not charging (brushes looked good when I had the flywheel off). As far as I know it was charging before (but it ran so poorly that I don't know for sure). So I am guessing if not brushes then it is the voltage regulator?? Here is what mine has currently, I do not know why there are what seems to be 2 voltage regulators? Any clue?

The other issue that started is the selector now does not go into neutral while cart is running. It is either forward or reverse, however if you put the lever in neutral (straight up) and shut it off, when you start it up it will be in neutral, till you move it. I am guessing this may be a faulty micro switch?

Thanks guys for any help with this.

There is a conversion diagram around here somewhere to change a 4 wire regulator to a 3 wire. The old ones are not available.

Your selector switch is an electrical contactor that runs the engine in forward, or reverse. By putting it in neutral, you are opening the switch. It is doing what it's supposed to be doing. It will only make contact in full left, or full right.

Cart around, thanks I will look for a conversion. As for the selector I see what you are saying and guess it is working as it should then.

Any idea what the 2nd box is below the voltage regulator? The wiring diagram calls it a "Relay" And all the parts guys sell voltage regulators for 1980+ EZGO 2 strokes, guess this is another "oddball" 79 thing? So if I find this 4 wire to 3 wire conversion I can use the 1980+ voltage regulator then, correct? Doing away with the 2nd box "relay" then?
