Default st 4x4 front 2x2 not engaging

newbe here with 2006 st 4x4 18hp honda. the shift is functioning properly however no 4 wheel i suspect the lay shaft is not transfering power to the front differential. my question is it possible the gear on the front of the lay shaft is stripped? of course anything is possible(anwsering my own question) my question does the rear differential alway receive power irrespective of the transfer case providing power to the front differentia. now i am confused. any testing suggesting before i dis assemble. also of note this site is extremely helpful in resolving other issues i have already fised with your imput. greatly appreciated!!

The power is always to the rear output. The 4x lever moves to engage the front output. If I remember correctly everything happens under that 4 bolt cover at the front output. Disconnect your cable and move the lever by hand (might need to use a crescent wrench) and see how it feels. It will be detented.

I have four of these. With mine I have not had a problem with the output of the transfer case. Just stripped splines on the output of the front diff and inner cv joints. Jack up your cart safely (all 4 wheels) and engage the 4x. Does the front prop shaft going to the front diff turn? Check each front wheel as turn them and watch what happens. If you have the front diff locked and you were to turn one wheel the other should turn the same direction as well as the front shaft to the trans. The front prop shaft will turn any time the cart is moving even in 2wd.
