Default 91 Marathon Gas Pedal doesnt always make it (ez)GO

I've got a 1991 ezgo marathon in pretty decent shape - only kicker is sometimes when I hit the pedal, it doesn't start the cart... I end up pushing the pedal up and down several times and then it will start - I don't believe the belt on the starter is slipping causing this - any ideas?

Take off the seat and double check that the belt is not slipping. There are several possible causes of your issue but a loose belt is one possible cause.

Does the cart do anything at all when you press the pedal, does it try and turn just not run? If it's not doing anything it could either be a microswitch or run solenoid.... Or even a loose connection.

Could also be worn starter/generator brushes

Finally got a chance to look at this again this weekend - I pulled the seat off and watched the starter as I hit the pedal - it actually seemed like the opposite of a loose belt - it seemed like the starter was having trouble pulling it over. It would spin the belt very slowly before it would 'get everything rolling' and pull it over just fine.

Any thoughts?

Check for loose poor connections if you find a connection that is warm that is usually a good indicator of poor connection also check the starter/generator brushes

I have a 91 that I'm rebuilding now. It is doing the same thing. I am using a lawn mower battery and was wondering if it doesn't have enough cold cranking amps. I don't know what replacement battery is the correct one to use.

I agree with Spicy,

Loose or corroded connection could make problem come and go. and the connection will get hot.

More then likely the brushes are the issue.
Most of the time you can file the brushes flat, sand the armature, just clean it up, where the brushes meet it and clean the crud out of it and it works just fine!

I'll pull the starter off and give it a once over - I'm betting you guys are correct - I think the cart had the original spark plug, air filter, gas filter, etc when I bought it...

I'll report back what I find - might be after golf season though

I just changed the brushes and that was my main problem. You can see that they were almost down to the line. They look like they still could be good enough but no.
