Default 1986 ezgo Marathon starving for air

Been reading as much as possible but did not find mention of air starvation.

Spits and sputters in hot humid weather and will not run right unless I remove air filter.

Had new carb installed awhile back and usually runs fine. Is this common? I know the air filter can be replaced but does the same thing with no filter and housing assembly installed. Right now it is open carb to run.

Thanks for any suggestions or ideas until humidity in Mich dries up.

Check your exhaust pipe, and muffler for clogs. What ratio are you mixing your gas/oil?

OK, will check exhaust, that sounds plausible.

Mix gas and oil? I put gas in gas tank and oil in oil tank and drive away. Is that the wrong approach to assume oil is getting injected automatically?

How have I not seized the engine?

Most guys remove the oiler system. It is going to eventually fail. You won't know until the piston scores the inside of the cylinder, and it doesn't run.

Cart Around,

Good information there, thanks. I will take the oil from the tank and mix with gas going forward.

I worked on getting the exhaust off and after messing with one bolt that welding flash kept my socket from getting a purchase on, I got it off. Took out the gaskets and left muffler on for now and man it is loud! Sounds like a hot rod and seems to run better with just a 1/4 inch gap in the pipe. Need to pull muffler off and do more testing tomorrow.

So, how to check for restrictions or where to get new parts is the next question?

Appreciate any advice for sure!

If you determine that it really is a clogged exhaust causing your issues, you will remove the pipe to clean out the gunk, and then build a really hot fire to Toss your muffler in for a few hours. That will burn everything out. You can find a lot of reading on muffler barbecues on here.

Just like this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhRa-hqyXgQ

For the oiler, we remove everything, and plug the banjo hole with a 6mm bolt. You want your intake air tight. All you need on the carburetor then is a choke cable, and a throttle cable. Mix the gas 128:1. One ounce of oil per gallon of gas.

Took off muffler and pipe. Everything seems clear but bigger issues found.

Muffler is holding everything together as bolts missing and a broken weld.

Putting it back together and going to have to run it with no filter. Very discouraging.

Unhappy Re: 1986 ezgo Marathon starving for air

Maybe something as simple as a carb adjustment, but hate to mess that up as it still runs despite my ham fisted tinkering and bleeding all over everything.

Some days you win but this was not one of those days.

Here is your manual. There is no real adjustment on the carburetor.
