Cool 1987 easy go speed surge

Hi,I have a '87 easy go gas 2 cycle that is having speed surges after running 15-30 min? It feels like slippage but not certain if its gas related or clutch slipping or even rear end? I put a new drive belt on yesterday "which did have wear" but still surging after running a few minutes, I added 80-90 wt. rear end oil, "no help" I would really appreciate any suggestions on what direction to go!

Could it be the governor?

See what happens when you loosen the gas cap.

If that doesn't help, it might be a heat problem.

There is tin work around the fins. It needs to be in place, and the fins need to be clean, and clear.

After that, I would look at loss of spark from heat. Could be plug, wire, or coil.

That makes two of us,the belt was hard/cracked,so it needed replacing bur did not resolve this surging but I keep trying to connect with the fact that it has to have something to do with the heating up,thought the old belt may have been slipping inside the flanges. I'm going to try it this pm with the gas cap loose.fuel pump could be getting weak? Thanks

What were the results of the things you were going to check?

Does the engine rev up, or die down?

Does it sound like it's sputtering?

Did you try jiggling the handle?

Does it run strong before this surging happens?

Hard to say without hearing it run. Maybe something as simple as a spark plug.

After running a few minutes the RPM's seem to speed up without accelerating with the pedal the slow back down less than the applied acceleration and if I release the pedal all together it stops hard like putting on the brake, before this starts it runs strong and good, you can hear rpm increase in the engine for a second and decrease for a second, seems to be worse at slower speed? I am in hopes that it isn't in the clutch system $$$ Thanks oh I loosened the gas cap and cleaned the fins out also. The handle you are refering to is the forward/reverse? If so I have not done that.

Jiggling the handle was just a joke.

Take the ferule off of the governor cable to disconnect it at the carburetor.

I have company that just showed up. Will be back later.
