Default Major carb issue.

I have an 88 marathon with the 2pg engine that I am about ready to put a torch to and make the center of a bon fire. I have worked out several bugs with this thing but now have a new dilemma.

On the same side as the fuel inlet, there are two small ports, one above the other. There is nothing in these ports, so I have no idea what they are for.

When I got the cart, the seller gave me an extra carb, identical to the one on it.

All of a sudden, when trying to start the cart, it started to shoot gas out this upper port. we tried to put a small screw in it to stop the leak but when we did the cart wouldn't even try to start, take the screw out and it would try to fire but dump gas out.

I put the second carb on and it ran great, my son ran it around the yard for about 2 hours and BAM the same exact thing, same exact spot, two different carbs. Can any give me an idea of what is going on before I waste the money to try a third carb.

Thanks

I think those are carb bowl vents and the carb is getting too much fuel pressure or there is dirt in the fuel system that is getting in between the needle valve and seat. This little valve keeps more fuel from coming into the carb when the bowl is full. If it doesn't seal well, then more gas enters and it eventually overflows out the top and floods to engine.

The inlet needle in the bowl is working because the fuel is not overflowing, and the gas only shoots out when you crank the engine over to start it. It does shoot out in pulses as though the fuel pump is pushing it, but why and how? there is no way to regulate how much fuel the pump puts out. I could under stand a dirt problem in the first carb but not after the second carb, I checked the tank last fall and it was clean, and installed a new filter.
