HEI Ignition on 2PG
I know this has been discussed somewhat, but I have a specific question for you all. My cart recently started running badly, it starts fine but will spit and sputter as you drive. I pulled the fan off today and adjusted the points, and that improved but didn't fix the problem. I have the weird transition year (1980) with the external generator but points & condenser. Has anyone just put in a timing plate/pickup/coil/etc from a 1981+ cart in an older cart like mine? I saw a discussion about the lobe on the crank possibly being different, but the motor rebuild kit I bought back in the day was for 80-88 carts. Just trying to get a bit more reliability/less maintenance and hopefully do the HEI conversion after.

Re: HEI Ignition on 2PG
Can someone measure the distance between mounting screws on their pulsar coil? I feel like if that matches my points bolts, I should just be able to switch them and then do the HEI mod? The rebuild kit I put in my motor was for 80-88 carts, so I feel like the crank should be compatible with a pulsar coil...

The pulsar doesn't use a lobe. It's magnetic pickup. You would need a way to trigger the pulsar. http://racetechelectric.com/ft-752-p...n-systems.html
I don't know if a new flywheel would fit, or if the key slot is in the right place. Read this. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-e...onversion.html And this. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-h...-ignition.html |

Re: HEI Ignition on 2PG
Think my plan is to just buy a motor out of an '85 that a local shop is selling. I'll swap out all my new(er) parts from my motor and put in new crank seals and gaskets. Key slot SHOULD be in the right place because the crank is for 80-88...I'm assuming it has a lobe for those who put it in an 80 cart?

Re: HEI Ignition on 2PG
This talks about the lobe going away, but since you are installing an 85 engine, it won't matter. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-e...explained.html
If you don't get the ignitor box from the newer cart, you will need to do the HEI mod. |

Re: HEI Ignition on 2PG
Seems like a worthwhile mod, so I think I definitely will. Thanks for all your help! So will I need any other electronics from the donor cart?

Re: HEI Ignition on 2PG
These are the three main components
Pulsar is behind the flywheel. Ignitor box from the cart. (Eliminated by HEI mod) Ignition coil from the cart. You probably don't need a different coil, but if it's there, and free, I would grab it. I did the HEI mod, and spent $15 on a normal round ignition coil. I spent less than $20 on the HEI module. It's been 4 years now with no issues. |

Re: HEI Ignition on 2PG
As another alternative if you end up keeping the point, years ago we used dodge ignition modules on bikes to up the power and make the points last longer. The points still function but under a drastically reduced load. I could not remember the wiring but i recently came back across these diagrams.
Maybe someone else out there stuck with points this will help them too. The link above shows the circuit to add power, Post 15, but there is one of the modules out there that does not require this on the dodge Chrysler module. I just do not remember witch one. Re: HEI Ignition on 2PG
More than one way to skin a cat, as they say! Thanks for the info. Think I'm still gonna go with the '85 motor swap because the points on the '80 (as far as I know) were only made one year, so finding them is pretty difficult. Might as well upgrade now and have parts readily available, if necessary.

Re: HEI Ignition on 2PG
Well, I picked up the engine from the '85 on Friday, and got to breaking it down today.
Just as I had hoped, the cases are exactly the same. So as far as I can tell, all I have to do is switch the timing plates (done) and flywheels, then buy the HEI parts and swap them out. I guess we'll find out soon! Hopefully this helps other guys with a 1980, since I can't say with any certainty if the cases before that were the same. 1985: 1980: Swapped: Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
