Default EZ-go Reaches Top Speed but Won't Maintain

Hello all,

Been a while since I've bugged anyone so I thought it was time! I've got an '03 EZ-Go TXT that says "High Performance" on the side of the body. Not sure that's a real thing, but I mention it in the spirit of full disclosure. I downloaded a speedometer app on my phone and took the cart for a spin. The cart will get up to 20mph on the dot, but will only maintain about 17mph after that. I have a shorter belt on it for a little more torque, but I wouldn't think that would cause a problem.

Just curious if this is a chronic problem for golf carts or if I should be looking at doing something? I know you can get high speed gears, etc. I don't know that it bothers me that much, really just more curious than anything at this point.

Thanks in advance!

Michael

Here is my experience with an 86 marathon - lifted with 22in tires.

I can get a top speed around 20mph. Mostly that is on a very smooth straight away and/or down a hill. But I average around 16 to 17mph on semi smooth ground.

I would think that you might be running into a governor issue or simply the cart has good acceleration but tends to maintain a 17mph top speed over distance.

Just my $.02.

Sounds about right to me, getting up to 20 and then the governor kicks in and cuts it back to 17.

Not bad with the short belt I'd say.
