Default EZGO 295 pre-mci trouble starting on hills.

I am having issues with my 2007 mpt1200. At some point in it's life someone swapped in a pre-mci 295. When cold it starts and runs great. Onced warmed up it struggles to start on hills and even on flat ground. Once moving all is well. It seems a little slow going up hills (8-9 mph) but I am not sure what is normal. It has a new belt (stock length), new carb, fuel filter with no change. I adjusted the valves but will check them again. I have attached videos showing the belt and how the cart performs.

I'd start with compression check if you set valves to .004 and toss in a new set of spark plugs iv seen fouled spark plugs do goofy things

Sorry I should have added compression is around 145-150 on both cylinders. Checked the valves and the clearance was good. It does appear that the intake valves are really worn. I think I'm going to pull the motor out and pull head.

145 and 150 is still good for an older motor... Once it's warmed up and starts acting up pull the plugs and inspect them if they are wet or dry

someone swapped a wire or two to make it run (the old motor) with the newer ignition - which will work, within reason (but not what You're looking for) ... Plus it's a Pre-MCI 295 ... Depending on how deep You are into it (hopefully under a grand) I'd flip it, personally

Whoever swapped it appears to have swapped to the older ignition system. It has the older igniter. I have a good bit of time but not a ton of money in it. On flat ground it will run 17-18 but hills it slows to 12 mph. The 295 bored out with 350 pistons seems to be a decent setup from what I have seen. Is the premci that bad of a motor?

The pre mci is not bad motor. Do a valve job and a thorough clean of the carb and it will run really well, with that compression. People knock the old 295 but apart from wearing valves due to poor inlet filtration, its a tough little engine. I can tell you now, when you pop the head off, the inlet valves will be sunk into the head. Two new inlet valves and gaskets and you will be amazed at the difference.

The 350 engine if you can get one, with the 295 cylinder head should get you up to 20hp, so well worth trying to find one. The 295 gives 9hp, the 350 around 12hp and a good tight 350 with 295 head will surprise you.

For what it costs, doing the valves is well worth it till you decide to upgrade.

Thank you for the help! I should have the head off tonight . I will update when I do. I have had no luck looking for a used 350. I have tried to find info on machining for 350 pistons but there is not a ton of info. From what I gather is the only other modification is to deck the block due to the difference in pin height between the 295/350 pistons.

Only downside i see with boring out to 350 is the need for a larger jetted carb?

That seems to be the only fueling change is the main jet from what I can tell. I am going to make a post about it and see if anyone has first hand experience. If not I may just freshen up the 295 and call it a day.
