Default 88 gas ezgo marathon project

ello everyone. Thanks for all the great information. We recently purchased a 1988 EZGO Marathon gas that has the 2 PG engine and I am looking at options to make it as much fun as possible. I have seen discussions on HEI ignitions for 3PG carts and wondering if they make them for the 2PG engines and whether they are worth looking into. Ultimately looking to get as much speed and reliability as I can from this cart. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome. We keep it at a boat club and occasionly may race it against other carts. Thanks in advance.

If it already runs, the HEI isn't going to do anything for you. (Forgot to say that yes, it is the exact same conversion as the 3pg. Same wiring diagram too.)

Your 88 has 11 horse power compared to other 2pg carts that have 9.

About the best you can do the way it is right now, is to eliminate the governor. That will take you from 12 mph to around 18.

Taller tires will get you faster, but that will require a lift kit.

I never lifted mine, so I can't help you there.

Hello to you:

I think the HEI conversion is for anyone who has a golf cart engine that the electronic ignition has gone out on to bring their GC back to the running ranks without spending a ton of money on the factory ignition module, if it can be found that is.

I done the HEI conversion on my brothers golf cart cause he didn't want to spend the money to go back to the factory ignition. His is a '94, I believe, EZGO. I found it at the recyclers and picked it up for 130 bucks for him. It was missing the ignition module and the coil. We found a coil at Joplin but they charged him 80 bucks for it and wanted well over a hundred for a used ignition module so I did the HEI conversion for him. He's tighter than the bark on a tree. Thinks he can take that money with him when he dies, I think :-)

Thanks Todman, I am considering fabbing my own if I can find some time. Mechanically it's running great now. Still some room for improvement. Below is the gps speedometer app reading from tooling around in the driveway. I got up to 19 before I ran out of driveway.

Pulled the fenders off and am getting ready to prep the body for paint. Man there is a lot of Bondi on thing. I started hammering our the dents. I'm not a body guy, but I am Hoping to get it to look good enough to powder coat. We are thinking about doing a copper vein and black theme. I'll update as we get into it.

Powdercoat is awesome. I did it to my frame, has been super durable. I didn’t do my body because it’s pretty rough and am definitely not a body guy. Here were my results:

Before

Blasted

Done

Very nice. That is a lot of work. I will post up ours as it progresses. Luckily we have a bodyman in the family that can help guide me. We also own a powder coating and fabrication shop so you may see some not so average things happen to this cart.

Making good progress. Got all of the body panels torn off and stripped down. Working on hammering out the dents and then will fill dents with labmetal. Then plan to sand and powdercoat
