Default Ezgo gas txt oil catch can.

I recently purchased a 1999 Ezgo txt with the robin 295cc. After working on getting it running because it had been sitting in a barn for over a year i noticed that after driving for about 20min id get a burning oil smell and soon realized when i opened the airbox it was soaked in oil. So after an attempt of cleaning my pcv ( pulled it off and cleaned out drain hole with carb cleaner) i still had the issue of oil making its way through the the pcv hose into my airbox. I decided to make my own oil catch can to see if it would help and it worked great. So i thaught since i could never find anything online about a golf cart oil catch can i would make this post. Hope this helps anyone who runs into this same problem. The entire kit including paint can, fittings, hose, steel scourer and clamps cost $35. Before I would get oil in my air box which found its way into the carberator and smelled terrible when my family and I were cruising the neighborhood. If ur having the same issue and know you didn’t overfill the oil consider an oil catch can!

Nice job.

BUT!

before making alterations, i would have suggested finding the cause of the oil in the filter box. The first things to check on these engines is valve lash and compression. Do this and come back with the results and we can eliminate the oil problem therefore no catch tank will be required. My suspicion is valve lash too tight and /or worn inlet valves. Very common with these engines.

Also a blocked up air filter will cause oil to be drawn up the PCV hose.

Hope this helps.

So as I mentioned the cart had been sitting for awhile so I had to take the carb apart and clean out the crud, replaced fuel filter, air filter and cleaned entire air box because it was filthy. I replaced plugs and checked spark and it was great, but still wouldn’t crank. I finally checked compression and it was only 30lb’s on both cylinders. I watched a few videos and learned about how so check valves so I took a chance and reset the valves because like u said they were way to tight. I set it 004, after that it cranked right up. Rechecked compression and it is now 90lb on both. Inside of my motor is spotless very clean no sludge. but It sounds like it has a rattle I’m not sure what from. Running straight 30w oil now conventional but thinking about switching to synthetic. I haven’t had the cart long and have only ran maybe 2gallons of gas through engine. So I’m still trying to figure out the cart and learning everyday about these engines.

Nice work on the can!
But with 90 lbs of compression, I guess you may know its time for a rebuild!

Not overfilled with oil. And yes I’ve already priced a rebuild kit. I don’t know, it runs well enough for me, plenty of power, it doesn’t smoke out the neighborhood, I’m planning on keeping oil and fuel fresh and not drive it hard, I may get a few years out of it how it is!

LOL, I here ya. And it may well last.

A few things you may not know about this engine. It has no rod bearings, Its aluminum rod too steel crank! When they start knocking or seize up as they do it may take out the crank. The darn crank is crazy expensive!
a new rebuild has about 175-180 lbs of compression, so your is 1/2 that.
These engines are easy to build with some mechanical ability and doesn't cost much if you do it before it comes apart!

Good luck

Agree with gear head if you can a preventative rebuild it will potentially save you in the long run most of the blown Robin's iv seen are a broken connecting rod seised to the crank

As stated by myself and others, if you have a knock, suspect the rod ends to be bad. The crank will have picked up on the ally rods and created grooves and excessive wear on the rod ends. Do it now as others have said and while doing the rebuild, i would suggest new inlet valves as i am pretty certain the edges will be worn and possibly causing your low compression. Do two compression tests, one dry and one with some oil (a spoon at most) down the plug holes with the throttle wide open. If you get a big rise in compression with the oil suspect worn rings/bore if no real difference then the valves are shot. to be honest, anything lower than around 120 psi i would definitely be doing a full rebuild of the engine.

Not trying to put you on a downer, just trying to advise what i would do in your case.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: if the rings are good, just new rods, inlet valves and a hone will put you in good shape, but on the rebuild, replace all gaskets and oil seals for good measure. Crank and bearings will probably be fine but the crank may need the picked up ally polished off before re use.

After thinking lastnight about the possibility of having to rebuild my engine i think that may be the best way to go. I payed $1,000.00 for the cart, and immediatly put $300.00 in parts (new battery, tune up kit, tinted windshield, l.e.d headlight and taillight kit, wheels, spare parts). with only have $1300.00 invested i think buying a rebuild kit would be a good idea to ensure it stay running well. I am confident i can rebuild it myself, but do you have any suggestions on which kit to buy? Should i buy the Entire rebuild kit for 300 or a not so comlete one fore under 200. please send me a link to whatever u think, thanks for all the input and suggestions!
