2pg Engine Re-assembly

I ordered a complete engine rebuild for my 88 2pg. I am reassembling the engine. Heated up both crank case halves and dropped in bearings from freezer...took a little tapping with a piece of wood to get them into the case halves being careful not to press on the race of the bearings (probably could have been hotter and I wouldn't have had to tap on it at all). I tapped the case halves with the bearings seated inside the halves onto the crank...lubed up with 2 cycle oil...then used some Permatex anaerobic gasket maker and then torqued the bolts down to around 17Foot Pounds in a criss-cross fashion. (I know the specs 18-24 but will torque to spec later when my buddy brings his $500 snap-on torque wrench over). Got it all together but when I spin the crank it seems stiff...I feel like it should spin more freely than what it is now. I believe when I tapped the crankshaft into the bearings on the case halves and tightened the case bolts it put pressure on the race of the bearings. I tried taking a rubber mallet and banging a bit on each side of the crank to see if it would loosen up a little which I think it did but after several beers I was in no condition to make that judgment. My question is should I split the case again and do the opposite way...just have the bearings pressed onto the crank and put the whole crank with the bearings into the freezer then heat the crank case halves up real good and try again? Has anyone else had this issue? Suggestions? Thinking it probably will be okay but just want to see what you all think!

never had any shims to begin with...read a lot of people don't have those either.

I don't have any experience with this motor but rebuilt a lot of Yamaha g1 strokes and they were stiff to turn over by hand with new bearings can you grab the end of the crank and turn it with one hand?

yes I can...FYI I have not installed the jug or piston yet so no compression. Just seems a little stiff...

I did remember the shims being on the cart the first time I replaced the bearings now that I think about it (buddy said I didnt need them and pitched them). Got the last two in stock at my local golf cart shop today...Part# 15466G1. Will try sliding those 2 on see if that helps.

I think if the golf cart shop sells them they probably belong on the crank...who knows???

Controversy is not the right word that I want. It was more like a discussion on here years ago. It was about the need, and placement of the shims. Some said yes. Some said no. I really don't remember if I used them myself. I do remember making sure that the bearings weren't rubbing up against the lobes of the crankshaft.

I kind of wonder if they were an optional use at the factory if something wasn't in specs.

I can't give a definitive answer, but it might be worth researching.

Cant tell from that diagram... Do both of the shims go on the same side of the crank faceing the flywheel side....or does one go one each side of the crank??? I believe they go one the same side. Can anyone confirm?

You're probably right on there...guess ill have to measure it out...since I have basically a brand new motor with a new crank I might not need them. Wouldn't those make it tighter tho???

Collaborative thought from the guys at the golf cart shop believe they both go on the double bearing side against the crank...hummm
