Question 91 ezgo marathon rear end

Hello, im looking at picking up a 91 gas ezgo marathon, its been lifted with a fair a mount of options done to it. Here is the issue, the rear end is blown out, it runs but won't move, he thought it was the clutch, but that's been rebuilt. I have an option to also pick up a 88 or 89 ezgo marathon, but its Electic, the batters and everything have been pulled to convert to gas. What I'm hoping is someone will know if that electric rear can be used on a gas cart. If not, does anyone have a reasonable option for a rear end?

Welcome to BGW

No you can't use the electric rear. What's wrong with the rear end, what does it do. Or what does it not do . The rear your talking about, does it have a forward and reverse switch??. It could be a striped brake hub

Thanks, well they person selling the cart said that they were driving around their campsite and it just started to coast. He thought the clutch was the problem so he had it rebuilt, but that didn't help. That's why he thinks it's in the rear end housing. I've only seen the cart once and it was at night, but next time I see it I will check for that switch.

I agree with rib, them rearends are pretty stout, check the center axle nuts on the rear wheels see if one is spinning.

Ok, another updated. I ended up taking a chance and picked up that cart. The issue is a little worse than what I was told, the secondary drive clutch and input shaft separated from the rear. Never seen that before. I haven't had a chance to dig into it yet. But I'll keep everyone updated, I have a feeling I'll be looking for links to get parts soon.

Question Re: 91 ezgo marathon rear end

I took some better photos tonight, has anyone ever seen or had this happen to them before? Trying to gauge just how bad this really is.

I think It would be fair to say that input shaft is toast but I wouldn't get too discouraged...if you've got any sort of mechanical skills and decent with a welder you might be able to weld that S.O.B back together. Worst case is you have to get a new input shaft...may have to do some machine work where the seal goes as well but hard to tell from pics. Show some pics when you get it disassembled.
