Default '02 TXT Wont Start at WOT

Bought this cart from a guy who claimed to have had the 295 rebuilt. Buuuuut, I can't verify that at all.

My problem is this:

After it's warmed up, the cart will start and run fine, but only if you feather the throttle at startup.

If you floor it, it will just turn over, and not fire.

And, with anything more than the goldilocks throttle input it will often backfire slightly back through the carb, and then go. Once running, it's just fine, and will hit 21 or so, no problem.

On the carb, there is an adjustment screw, but it is limited by a black plastic cap, that only gives me a small amount of adjustment.

I have already pulled the valve cover, everything is adjusted to spec, and looks ridiculously shiny and new.

I double checked the fuel pump. It's good.

Spark is blue and appears strong. Plugs show a clean burn. Not wet or oily, and have zero carbon buildup.

I can live with it, but if my buddies drive it on the course they winge about it.

Any ideas? Or, I could always find new friends.......

May be the transition jet in the carb is blocked. Strip the carb and give it a thorough cleaning out.

Agreed with cartmaster pick up a set of torch tip cleaners they work great for cleaning out the small Jets I also like to blow air through the passages to make sure they aren't blocked

Thanks for the replies, fellas. I was out of town for a few days... Carb is coming off!

Are there much for gaskets in there that I should replace while its apart?

If you are lucky, the gaskets ( quite a few ) may come off clean unless the carb has been overtightened too much in the past. I cant advise where to get new ones from as i am in the UK.

On another note, can you do a compression test? you may find the inlet valves are worn and need adjusting, this will give similar symptoms and is easy to check, just remove the six bolts on the plastic valve cover, remove it carefully and check that you do not damage the rubber gasket, as it is reusable. then check valve lash. you may find the two inner valves are too tight. If so, adjust them with the lobes pointing down and set them at .004 or if you ride hard you can go up to .006 quite safely it will just be slightly noisier. It is worth doing this first before the carb, as it will give similar symptoms and may save you stripping the carb. but you may find both valves and carb are in need of attention.

Once you have done this and reassembled, make absolutely sure the air filter is in tip top condition and there are absolutely no leaks in the air box, or you will be doing it again soon and also replacing the inner two valves.

Edit, i just looked back and it appears the valves are OK. but did you check the gap?

also i just had a thought. Is it the original carb or maybe a replacement chinese copy? if chinese, these are known to be sold with drilling swarf still in them and should be thoroughly cleaned before fitting.

I did pop the cover off, and turned the engine by hand to check lash. Or more accurately, that there was some.. I didn't check with a feeler though.

The air filter looks new, but might be worth replacing to make certain.

Carb origin is unknown. I still need to pop it off and take a look.

I have a broken rib slowing me down, so I'm letting it slide down my to-do list for the moment.
