Default Piston hitting spark plug 91 GTX 800

Need some help. I just picked up a 1991 EZGO utility cart and I don’t know much about this motor. Serial# is A22641.
It does run barely, but when it turns over it has a loud clicking noise. I take the plug out and it goes away. The piston is definitely tapping the plug. Anyone had this issue before? It has good compression still.

Please confirm what spark plug should go in this. And also if it comes pre gapped or if I need to gap it.

2 cylinder = NGK BP4ES
1 cylinder = NGK BP4HS

.030 plug gap

Is the piston closing the gap when it hits the plug?

and what is "It does run barely" ?

It is a 1 cylinder. Is there a "short reach" version of this NGK BP4HS specifically for golf cart motors or all the same? Looking online I've seen this plug referred to as a standard plug and a short reach plug, so just checking.

Can you please explain what you mean by closing the gap?

It is very slow to start, but eventually will run. Plug is usually wet. Smokes pretty bad and smells like gas pretty bad, so I'm thinking fuel is getting into the crankcase from a bad fuel pump diaphragm. Changing that this weekend.

If the piston is hitting the plug it would close the gap on the plug, if not something else is going on.

and all NGK BP4HS have the same reach, also do you have a fresh gas/oil mix?

Thank you for explaining that. It is not closing the gap on the plug, I think it is just barely nicking it but you can definitely hear it when it's in and it goes away without the plug in.

The oil injection is still present on this, which I've never been a fan of. Thinking of doing away with that and mixing manually. I've read 128 to 1 ratio for these is recommended.

Can you also advise what motor this is? CC's, name, etc.

Thanks for your help.

I don't think the piston is hitting the plug or you would see evidence of it on the plug, maybe something else. I'm not familiar with the 2 cycle models but someone hear can identify you motor.

If it is a 91, it's a 3-pg 9hp 2 stroke. The clutches should be mounted with the belt going front to back instead of side to side.

The spark plug is on top too. We know it's not the valves hitting. I kind of doubt it's the plug, but have no idea what is making the noise.

Ok after doing some investigations, the clanking noise is not the piston hitting the spark plug. The noise does go away once it gets going faster and/or at top speed. From what Ive found online it could be the clutch.

Could be a rod bearing that is starting to fail due to excessive wear.
It would get quieter as things heat up and oil pressure increases.

Lets hope it's a clutch issue instead.
