Clogged muffler causing weak engine??

I have a 1987 Marathon with the 2PG Robin engine.
I just got this cart and it runs fine once it takes off (very slow to respond when you gas it from a stop), except when under load, then just idles at best. I did some searching here and removed the muffler to see if it runs better, and it ran great with all the power I need and even spin tires when trying to push against a solid object.
My question is: Would that be my issue? The muffler is very heavy and I think it is loaded up with gunk. There seems to be a lot of knowledge here, so before I spend $160, would like to get some opinions. I will just be using this for golfing.

Take your muffler and putt it in a camp fire and you can burn the junk out of it

How long will it need to be in the fire to get the crud burnt out?

You could try about 10 minutes and if that don't work you can go longer just pay attention well you do it
