Default 95 EZ-GO valve stem seals replacement

Thanks in advance everyone for the help. I’ve got some smoking on startup and ordered new valve stem seals to try. Can I do this by charging the cylinder with air without pulling the head? Do I need a valve spring compressor or can it be done by hand?

You should be able to compress the valve springs by hand, just watch out for the keepers if it has the "2 piece style" as they can fall into the oil return holes of the head & into the engine. The compressed air should work to hold each valve in place while you're changing out the seal.

How much air pressure is needed?

I'm not really sure but it shouldn't take a whole lot.

Is it possible I will push down on the retainer to get the keepers loose and break the seal and drop the valve in the cylinder?

If the piston is completely up (TDC) the valve may slip down but I don't think it can go very far before it rests on top of the piston. It's been awhile since I replaced any with the head still in place but I just unkeyed one valve at a time swapped out the seal then replaced the spring & retainer;it can be a little tricky holding the valve stem up while you re-install the retainer but it can be done .

Won't the cylinder roll down to the bottom once the cylinder is charged with air? Is there a better way then air pressure to do it? I've read of guys threading nylon rope into the cylinder but not sure how well that would work either.

Nylon rope would work if you get enough in it and if you use air yes the cylinder will be at the bottom of the stroke but with the valve lash backed off the valves will be closed so it's not an issue

I just did this job using compressed shop air to hold valves closed. Slid the rockers off to one side for access to each cylinder. I fumbled a bit using an open end 15mm wrench to push on retainer to compress spring. I stuffed paper towel into drain holes and put fender covers all around, like operating table. I found that I could put the keepers in the retainer and push down with my thumb to get keepers in place. Magnets only made it worse. Patience was rewarded with NO SMOKE while riding! Yahoo! Hope this helps someone
