Workhorse hydraulic dump box
I recently bought a 2000 Workhorse 1200lx with a manual dump box. I quickly discovered that it was pretty heavy to lift empty let alone when it was moderately loaded. So I found there was an electric linear actuator that as an option but the cost is ridiculous. My solution was to make it hydraulic. I scavenged a hydraulic pump from a derelict boat used to raise/lower the outdrive. It included the pump, reservoir, solenoids and wiring in a compact package. I mounted the pump on the cross member and ran hoses back to a hydraulic cylinder. A simple SPDT switch completed the project. I later added a limit switch to keep the hydraulic cylinder from pulling down too far when closing the box and causing damage. My hoses are a bit long but better to have them long rather than too short.
The system works great and is very simple. Best part is that it didn't cost much to build. I have less than $200 into the system. |
