Default 89 EZ GO Fuel Pump/Insulator gasket

HI folks, my first post so here goes. I recently acquired a 89 EZ go marathon with a 3pg motor. I was wondering if the insulator gasket is necessary. Does it keep things airtight for the pump to work correctly or at its optimum? I noticed after driving the cart around a couple miles it seemed to get warm and stop pumping fuel, thus killing the cart, till it cooled a little. Then after a good looking over I noticed when I recently removed and cleaned the fuel pump that I missed not having the gasket square. In other words the bottom was lined up but the top of the gasket was to the ight of the hole. So that would kinda block the vacuum and allow some air in the hole. Would that have created my problem? I'm new to the carting world so any help is appreciated.
