1983 ezgo 3 stroke. Electrical issues.
1 week ago me and wife were going to take the cart around town. I put it in reverse to back out of the garage, when i put it in forward it did nothing. Put it back in reverse and it did nothing. Ever since then its been down. Solenoid would buzz when i tried to start it, so i checked the volts and the battery had 12.5. I bought a new battery anyway, didnt make a difference. When i check the volts going to the selenoid it reads 12.5, so does everything else that is hot with the key on. As soon as i press the pedal and the accelerator switch clicks, sending power to the selenoids coil, the volts drop to 2.0-3.0. Ive checked the grounds throughout th cart and cleaned them, ive replaced wires that looked a little skanked out, ive checked everything that can be checked. Please watch the video, and see if you can diagnose this issue. Im at a loss, thats why i joined this forum. Thank you!

Probably corrosion inside the positive battery cable. Test with jumper cable between battery and solenoid.

I would suspect that solenoid could be bad.

where did you see the voltage drop? You need to follow the circuit from the battery onward at each connection until you find where the volage drops. both negative and positive circuits. this will find your fault.

What mix do you run in a 3 stroke?

Re: 1983 ezgo 3 stroke. Electrical issues.
I've run a wire from the battery to the other side of the selenoid, motor turned over just fine. I've tested and installed 3 different solenoids. All of them have a good coil and continuity, the trouble is between the battery and the selenoid. I've replaced the accelerator switch hoping it was the problem and the 2 or 3 volts were just bleeding through but thats not the case. I temporarily eliminated the fusible link between the ignition switch and the accelerator switch located in the f and r switch, and that didn't make a difference. Nothing else is between the battery and the selenoid other than the cable, and the cable checks out fine. It gets a perfect 12.5 volts until I hit the gas pedal. Nothing I've done has changed, it was running perfect for 2 months, and then one day it just died. I think my next step is replacing the positive battery cable going to the selenoid, although I don't think that's my problem. I think something is taking all the power and draining everything else? Maybe install a relay? I'm not sure. Just other things that I have read that somewhat apply to my situation. I can't find any other person that has had this problem, mostly because 1983 was an odd year, and I've heard a lot about the differences between the 1983 and other models.

Re: 1983 ezgo 3 stroke. Electrical issues.
I've also considered the f and r switch to be the problem, like it thought it was in neutral because it wasn't making good contact, but I'm not entirely sure if a bad f and r switch would kill the voltage like it's doing. I've pulled the switch apart, and it looks like it's been well used, but I can tell it's still making good contact. The f and r switch is hot after the selenoid kicks in, so surely it's not drawing the power is it?

I have had this problem twice. It was the positive cable both times. It's easy enough to test.
