Default 86 EZGO Start off

In order to get my 86 EZGO to start moving I need to slide the Forward/Reverse lever into allmost the Neural position.
Once the car takes off I can then slide it back into either the full forward or reverse position.
Once I stop the cart say at a stop sign , I need to repeat the process.

Can anybody tell me why this is?

Thanks..

I would probably take the switch apart test it and clean it.

What do you mean by start moving? The cart won't roll, or the starter won't turn?

That's an electric switch, so I will assume the starter won't turn. The big switch that you are moving controls which way the starter will turn by switch the connections of the high amperage cables that feed your starter. It is called the FnR switch. It can be taken apart, and the 4 big copper lugs can be cleaned. I really don't believe that is your problem.

I suspect that the neutral safety switch is worn, dirty, or out of adjustment. That is a small microswitch located at the rear of the FnR switch on the passenger side, about the 5 o'clock position. Its purpose is to make sure the FnR switch is fully engaged before allowing the solenoid to activate. It's connected in series with the fuse, key switch, and pedal switch.

The easiest way to test it is to jump the connecting wires. Carts 85, and earlier did not have that switch. You decide if you need it, or not.

Thanks for the replies guys!!

If I put all the way forward into either F or R , the generator will turn and the cart will want to fire but very slowly and the cart does not roll . As I move it towards the Neutral position it fires faster and the cart will then take off.
