Default 96 Ezgo Robin's motor take off problems

I have a 96 Ezgo with a Robin's motor. It won't hardly move but sometimes it will briefly. I've went through the carb after I noticed gas in the breather. I replaced the carb and I get can get up and running with the throttle in nuetral by tweeking the throttle with my fingers and see the clutch closing.
Now, when I have it in gear I can get the cart to move by turning the drive by hand but cannot get it enough gas to get it moving. So, I have no idea if the gear is stripped, it's not getting enough gas to run it....? I'm charging the battery afterwards each session.
When it does drive for a few minutes it seems to not be getting gas and just Peter out and I push it back, charge the battery, etc, etc.

Should be the 1st thing you do when working on a Robbins :) engine.

I have seen many a dollar wasted trying to make an engine perform when the intake valves had sunk in head.

Check that compression

Sorry, but a compression test is vital here. No point doing anything else until you have some numbers for us.

And to make you feel worse, gas/oil in the PCV or airbox is pretty much a sure sign you have inlet valve issues.

Might be worth popping off the valve cover and checking the valve lash. should be .004 but i bet it is more like .000

if so, resetting to .004 may help you out but on a robin that age i suspect new valves are needed.

So piggybacking on this response (sorry, I know thats not the most helpful...) how big of a deal is it to put in new valves? Do new seats need to be cut/pressed in? On a related note, can you just replace the valve stem seals without pulling the motor apart? Any ideas on where to get them?

I find it much better to just remove the engine. It can be done but way too much trouble for me anyway. Remove the engine and set it on a work table.

Most of the time you can just replace the intake valves and lap them in . Should make a thin line right in the middle of valve if it is seating. If you know of a machine shop that could grind the seats then of course it would be better but there are none around me.

The engine is not that hard to remove. When you start removing the head it becomes not so easy. The timing belt has to be removed. There are head bolts under the camshaft.

I always turn the engine to line up top cam gear mark before I tear it down. On the bottom gear there is a mark. It means nothing but here is what I do. Turn the engine until camshaft gear lines up with dot and then I do this.

I get a punch and make a mark on engine lining it up with the mark on bottom gear. When you are installing timing belt you will know for sure if you are in time. Looking at a key and lining it up with mark is sort of hard to do correct. For a 70 year old anyway who has problems seeing.

Timing marks are already on the pulleys Trig. No need to make your own.

Burntclutch
Its all in the engine manual that you can download from the tech section.
