EZGO 2 cycle dies after running a few minutes
My old 2 cycle EZGO is driving me nuts. I had carb issues, like a sticking float needle and just installed a new carb. It's a cheap carb from ebay, that looks good, but are they??? Anyway, with the new carb it appeared everything was fine for a few days, but now it only runs 30 seconds, maybe as long as 2 minutes and dies. I pull the gas line of the carb and I have gas there. You let it sit a few minutes and it will start and repeat the same condition. I tried adjusted the idle screw from the correct setting to turned out a few turns and it makes no difference. One thought I had is the gas line might be cracked and sucking air, but as soon as it dies, I pull the hose off and crank it and I'm getting gas at the carb. Anyone have any ideas? I'm stuck at this point.. Thanks

What year 2 stroke?
Are you mixing your gas? What ratio? Have you opened up the fuel pump yet? http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-e...fuel-pump.html |

I believe it's a 1987. gas mix is 1/128 . Same gas mix I've been using for years

Re: EZGO 2 cycle dies after running a few minutes
Why would I open up the fuel pump if it is pumping gas?

Re: EZGO 2 cycle dies after running a few minutes
Because we are troubleshooting, and eliminating all possibilities one at a time.
It's pumping gas, but is it getting too much gas? It could be a ripped diaphragm in the pump. You should also do a compression check. Then think about crankshaft seals. (They have no affect on compression). I'm leaving for work, but you can search my posts for the 85 manual. It has a good breakdown of the carburetor. You may have dirt in the stem, or main jet. |

Re: EZGO 2 cycle dies after running a few minutes
I pull the fuel line of the carb when the engine dies and I get fuel flow when I crank the engine. I've had the crank seal issue in the past and that's not the problem as it restarts and runs fine a few minutes after it dies. If crank seal is bad, it will not heal itself for 5 minutes. The carb is new and worked fine for a few days. Hard to believe dirt, as once again,, it runs fine, dies after a few minutes, wait, then restarts and repeats the cycle. As far as compression,,,, how could compression be good for 5 minutes then weak, and a few minutes later,, it's good?? Could it be an electrical issue? Bad coil?

Just a thought:
Could it be over heating and losing compression? Maybe check the fan itself and all the housing for obstructions, Mouse nests, wasps, dirt, mud etc... Like I said, just a thought. Good Luck |

Re: EZGO 2 cycle dies after running a few minutes
I checked that and it's clear under the shroud. It acts like a fuel issue, but I can't find anything wrong. I think I'm going to try changing the coil... I doubt that's it, but have to try something. I guess if I checked the spark right after it dies that would tell me something. The weird thing is after a few minutes the darn thing starts and runs fine.

Re: EZGO 2 cycle dies after running a few minutes
What you are describing is a classic case of fuel filters clogged. That symptom could be a restriction anywhere in the fuel delivery system. From the tank suction tube to the carb float needle and anywhere in between.

Re: EZGO 2 cycle dies after running a few minutes
Well, clogged filter would sound like a possibility, but how would you explain as soon as it dies, I pull off the fuel line and get good flow???
One of the first things I did was take off the inline filter and blow it out, it was clear. I also pumped gas back through the fuel line into the tank to make sure it was clear. |
