The worst symptom is that it acts dead.

Sometimes it won't pump fuel.

Sometimes it will be hard starting.

The most common symptom is that it will be slow, and sluggish, but run better in reverse.

Cart Around..the problem I have had at times.Generator/starter would turn but engine would not run on gas.At one time the seal on clutch side blowed out.I fit it back in and it's stayed. But when I parked cart recently ox it would not run on gas.Lately I pulled engine and looked at replacing seals (2)...any suggestions on why it want run at times.

Is the engine in, and does it run at all?

Intermittent could be ignition.

There are so many things to check. Compression, spark, not enough fuel, too much fuel. Dirty carburetor, or ripped diaphragm in fuel pump. Bad spark plug, ignition coil, or ignitor box going bad.

Tell us what it's doing right now, and start with checking compression. Then pull the fuel line from the carburetor. Crank it over, and look for a healthy spurt of fuel.

Pull the spark plug, and tell us what it looks like.

It may start on starter and go right to gas and run fine.Other times I could choke it and it would run. This went on for about a year and I parked it.Lately tried to run it (cleaned carb.,fresh fuel ,have spark strong battery and would only operate on starter.Never running on gas.So I pulled engine out .As I said before seal at clutch side blew out (on crank) I fit it back in and ran it for months.Anyway I looked at replacing both seal in hopes it may help.About ready to junk it.Very frustrating.
