Cool Newbie Needs help with 1986 Gas 2 Cycle EZ-GO?

Hi,
I am new the forum and wanted to see if anyone can assist me with my new cart? It is lifted and has what appears to be ATV tires on it. My question is I don't seem to have any power with the cart. It takes a few to take off from a dead start but once going on flat ground it moves well but as soon as it hits any kind of incline it dies down to a crawl. It came with a new throttle cable that wasn't installed so I went ahead and did that but it didn't help any. I also have changed the spark plug on it, and cleaned the corroborator. It didn't have any air filter box or air filter on it so I ended up making one because I was told I would have a hard time finding that part from that year? I am ordering a new throttle cable today and already ordered a tune up kit with new air filter, oil filter, and gas line filter and am waiting for them to arrive to install. Can anyone help me figure out why I can't seem to get any horse power from this cart? Also I did noticed when I ride it, it seems to not backfire but back spit exhaust quite often. When I first ran it, it was backfiring a bit but stopped now it just makes a loud back fire hiss. I read in one of these forums that it could be the compression? How would I check this?

Any one happen to have a Manuel for this cart that can be downloaded?

The big tires change the gearing. Even with stock tires hills will slow em down (but not stop them.. lol) Not much you can do except put smaller tires on.

As for this backfiring/spitting/hissing, unless it's a huge backfire, it's normal (the hissing sound). When you let off the gas it will kill the ignition and a little gas is gonna end up getting into there. When you give it gas again that extra gas gets burnt.

Mine does the same. It used to backfire until I adjusted the throttle cable, now it will just hiss now and then, especially when warmed up.

If you change to a smaller belt it will help a lot. I would do a compression test while tuning it up.

A good carb clean will help a lot sounds like it's either starving or flooding when you hit rough ground be sure to check float level and clean carb inside and out , if you are careful with the rubber gaskets and seals you won't even need a kit . try to leave the bowl seal rubber gasket alone as you can't get it out without damage usually .

Goat53- Thanks for the advice. Ok well i purchased a smaller belt but can't seem to get it to roll on? Any suggestions, tips, or tricks on how to replace the belt using a smaller one?

coondog - Thanks did you get yours changed by chance or find a belt that fit's yours? Also how do you do a compression test on the cart? I have never done this and dont' have the manual just yet? Let me know. Thanks

Also does anyone know what the spark plug gap should be for my 1986 2 Cycle Ez-go?

I plan on performing a compression check on mine this evening. You'll need a compression checker to do this, cheap at any auto parts store.

Bring engine up to operating temperature.

Remove spark plug, install compression checker.

Turn engine over 4-5 rotations, note compression on gauge, relieve pressure (if any).

Perform a second time for verification.

If low add a little oil to cylinder, if it helps, rings compromised.

Good two stroke numbers should be about 140 PSI.

TX Buggie - Thanks for that information I am also going to test mine tonight just to ensure it's were it needs to be.

dock98 - I found it just sitting there not even hooked up when I got it. So with it running ok I didn't put a second thought into it until I noticed I didn't have any horsepower at all going up hills so I started checking everything. Does the Governor have to be hooked up or no?
