Steps for starting an en engine that has been sitting a long time.
Long story short bought a non working EZGO with Robin 350cc engine. There was no information with regards as to what exactly was the issue. I think there is a great chance the engine is okay or at least no major issue. I do know it has been sitting for about three years. I know the seller travels a lot, there was also a mint Honda S2000 that also looks like it has been sitting for a long time (felt tempted to make an offer), so it makes me think that the Golf Cart was just abandoned and needs some tlc. There were also no signs that the engine bay has been worked on.
I'm thinking of taking the following steps: 1. Check if engine is seized. 2. if not, change oil and check and replace oil filter. 3. Drain old fuel from tank, change fuel filter, possibly replace fuel pump as its cheap.. 4. Check electrical 5. Try to start it... Does this look like a good way to proceed? Any thoughts or recommendations? Thank you. |

Okay my thoughts. Check if seized. Easy. Check oil, if level is okay and it looks fairly clean run it for now. Drain tank and put fresh fuel in it. Disconnect the fuel hose at the carb and put some pressurized air in at the fuel cap. Just enough until you see fresh fuel coming out of the line and not too high a pressure. Now if it were me I would pull and clean the carb. Your choice. Next I would pull the plugs and see what they look like. Leave them out for now. Lock it in neutral and see if it will turn over. If yes, run it for 30 seconds or so just to get some oil up in the engine. Now put the plugs back in and give it a shot.

you also might want to spray some light lubricating oil into the spark plug holes to wet the top of the cylinders and rings

Hold on before you take it apart!
Spray some penetrating oil in spark plug holes and let it set a least over night, see what you have then! |

Spray a good bit of wd40 in each spark plug hole. Let it sit overnight. Grab the primary clutch by hand and work it back and forth (with the spark plugs removed). Eventually it will break free. Then spin it over by hand a few times. After that 6ou should be good to try and start it. Squirt a little gas inside each spark plug hole, reinstall the plugs and hit the gas and see if she sputters. If so then time to clean the carb, make sure its getting fuel supply and run it!
I've restored a seized engine or two :) |
