Default 97 TXT Bogs down and backfires after it warms

I have a 97 ezgo txt with the 295 robin engine here at our repair shop. We took it in on trade and now looking to fix it up to sell. It was traded in with a condition that it wouldn't pull hills. After a tune up it "seemed" to run great! Well after driving it long enough for the engine to warm the cart seemed to bog down, wont pull hills, and backfire. I do notice that the exhaust does have some black smoke and a raw fuel smell as if the cart is running really rich. Now i will list the things we have done/tried in our repair attempts. It has a new ignitor, coil, voltage regulator, fuel pump, carb, and plugs. Relashed and double checked the valve lash at least a dozen times. Checked compression..165 on pass and 170 on driver. note is does appear the motor has been rebuilt. Checked timing and reset per the manual. Drained the tank and put in fresh fuel. Put inline spark tester on cart after warm and the spark appears to still be nice and hot. I am kinda at my wits end on this one. I have searched the forums and there has been other threads like this but none of which end with any positive result. I am bound and determined to see this through. Any and all help is much appreciated. I know this can be figured out.

How exactly did you reset the timing ? I assume you removed the cover and set the valve timing ? maybe it was off a tooth ?

Removed the timing cover and realigned the timing marks. Was off a tooth. Also relashed the valves.

the intake valves are junk if the intake lash screws are higher than the exhaust that means the valves are sunk in the head, i have seen them in the port past the seat. they may still run but not good.

Ok so they appear to be higher than the exhaust but how much is too much. here are some pics for reference.

Looks like one and a half to two thread thicknesses. When I think about the face of a valve and seat that looks like a lot.

Found another thread with similar issue and the result was a clogged muffler. Unhooked muffler but still have the same result.

Well we are going to bite the bullet and ordered new valves, springs, rockers, and retainers. And of course gaskets. Will report back once we rebuild the head.

Looking at those adjusters, i would say you are doing the right thing with new valves.

Watch your fingers taking the old ones out, they may have very sharp edges.
