Default Dual SPAL Electric Cooling Fans Install

So, I’m finally down to my last modification (maybe) to my Buggy, dual electric cooling fans. I purchased two 360cfm SPAL 5.5” waterproof electric “PULLER” fans. These fans will be mounted right below the front seat, and will be mounted flush mount on the inside (engine side) of the engine bay. On the outside by your feet, will be black aluminum plates and grills.

If your asking “why am I putting in electric fans”, well the answer is simple! I have done the key start mod on my buggy, so my buggy can sit and idle, and crawl at low speeds without turning off the engine. And lastly, it’s hot as hell in South Texas. So, to combate the heat when the buggy is not getting good air flow due to not moving very fast, I’m installing 2 electric fans that will provide a combined airflow of 720cfm.

My plates and grills have already come in, and I’m still waiting for my fans and harness to arrive. The plates come with two different styles of grills, and I do not know which one looks best, so that’s where I need your help.

Which of these two grills looks best mounted in the plate?

The plates will be installed where the blue painters tape is:

I already custom made and installed my “vented” black aluminum diamond plate engine access cover to help hot air to escape:

Here is a internet picture of the SPAL fan:

I will update this post as I complete the install!

Thanks,

Thanks, I just editing my first post to label them as “GRILL 1” and GRILL 2” to make it easier for you all to pick.

So then, I got 1 vote for “GRILL 2”

Thank you!

Well the fans came in so I got one installed (not wired yet) and mounted. Doing the mock up right now. I did install the GRILL 2 so everyone can see how it looks.

I did end up removing the fuel pump and moved it outward with two 1/2” aluminum stand off spacers I made (very easy to do). I have it mounted for mock up, but I still need to take it back off to remove the blue tape.

Once I’m done with the install I will get temperatures without the fans on and with the fans on.

If you were wondering why there are two rectangular holes (picture # 2) on my last post. Those are pre existing holes I had cut for my original vents (see picture below).I removed them and worked my fans around those pre existing holes (picture # 3 on last post). If you were to do this mod, you would just have a perfect circle.

This is what was there before:

So for my own curiosity are you going to have a thermostat to switch these on like a car does or are you just going to have a switch to do it manually?

Haven’t completely made up my mind yet on that one. What I am going to start off with is a “time delay” Bosch relay that will be triggered by the “turn on” small threaded post on the factory EZGO starter solenoid. So basically, once I start my buggy, the “turn on” lead from the EZGO starter solenoid will activate the Bosch relay, but, won’t turn on the fans until about 60-120 seconds after the engine has been running and warming up. I chose this type of relay because I didn’t want to two fans coming on at the same time as the engine is starting. This way the “delay” will ensure the engine gets all the full starting amps it needs, and once warmed up, the fans kick on.

I will probably end up also putting in a shut off toggle switch too.

Does that make sense?

Yeah that sounds good. I was thinking of doing something similar to mine with a fan and all well just because I'm bored and probably don't need it like you do being in South Texas. Not so warm in Ohio but anyway the only advantage I can think of with a thermostat is that the fans will continue to run after you shut the cart off and cool the compartment down and then shut themselves off.

I still might go that thermostat switch way! Haven’t completely made my mind up yet!

Just got the second fan mocked up and installed! Tomorrow I will take everything back off and paint the white exposed body panel under the panel/grill to make it cleaner.
