Default Piston Port

I have an 86 ezgo and I blew the head gasket. When I disassembled the engine the port in the piston was facing the exhaust side. As far as I know this engine has never been rebuilt. The cart has been running since I bought it off a friend 3 years ago.
Just want to verify that the port should be facing the carburetor side.
Going to change piston, rings and crank seals

Yes an ezgo 2 stroke engine. The port in the piston faces the carb port. It will run with the port facing the exhaust, but it will have no power

Strange. Ran for years like that.
It must have been rebuilt at some point.

Wow, You're going to really like the way it'll run with it in the right way lol......

Since it blew the head gasket I would plane the head to make sure it's flat

It shouldn’t run at all with the port facing the exhaust...

They do run with the hole in the piston, pointing to the exhaust port. It won't have a lot of power

Mine didn’t run. No need to ask how I know.

When I pulled it apart all the head bolts but one were only hand tight. I think that is why it blew out..

Makes sense on the power issue as I would have difficulties getting to move from a stop on a steep incline

Thanks for the guys!!!

So I am looking to order parts for the rebuild and I'm concerned with finding the piston in backwards that someone has rebuilt this before.

Without a dial bore gauge, how can I tell if the cylinder was bored before?

Are the pistons marked like they would be with a car engine, if they are oversized?

Thanks.
